China Expands West Asia Presence in Tech, Mining and Energy Amid India Ties

Separator

China has expanded its presence in the technology, mining, and energy sectors within resource-rich West Asian countries that maintain extensive connections with India. In Kuwait, known for its abundant oil resources, the technology sector collaboration with China is growing. Zain Kuwait, a prominent operator, recently conducted successful 5.5G trials in conjunction with Chinese telecom company Huawei, as reported by individuals familiar with the matter. Additionally, Kuwaiti telecom provider Ooredoo has forged a partnership with Huawei to deliver network infrastructure services in the nation.

Furthermore, Kuwait's leading information technology agency recently hosted a conference on artificial intelligence (AI) in partnership with Huawei, focusing on AI's impact on local governance. Additionally, there have been advancements in the local media sector in Kuwait, with Chinese state media making strides through the provision of "financial incentives," as reported by sources familiar with the situation.

Likewise, Saudi Arabia, in its efforts to modernize its economy through various initiatives, is welcoming Chinese involvement in its mining sector. As per individuals familiar with the situation, a joint consortium between Saudi Arabia and China is poised to invest approximately $30 million in the exploration of copper and zinc mining in the Madinah province of the Kingdom. They indicated that the consortium secured the contract in January.

Significantly, unlike in other West Asian nations, China has faced a setback in the United Arab Emirates, whose AI agency has decided to sever ties with Chinese suppliers of hardware such as chips and processors allegedly under advice from the United States. In Saudi Arabia, however, China is also making inroads in the infrastructure sector. China State Construction Engineering Corporation has been awarded a $2 billion contract for the construction of buildings and infrastructure in Saudi cities.

China has extended an offer to enhance Bahrain's space sector development. Reports suggest that two space agencies are currently exploring potential collaboration in peaceful space exploration, sharing data and information for joint projects, and jointly developing satellites.

In Syria, where China has initiated efforts for reconstruction, the country is now seeking Chinese assistance to develop its oil and mineral resources sector. Last month, both parties convened for a meeting to discuss cooperation in the oil sector. Additionally, in Northern Africa, China has extended an offer to support Tunisia in enhancing its transportation network.
