Mastercard and Singapore Airlines Partner for Co-Branded Cards in SE Asia

Separator

Mastercard and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have announced a strategic alliance spanning five years, with Mastercard being designated as the preferred partner for SIA's forthcoming co-branded card initiatives throughout Southeast Asia. This collaboration encompasses nations such as Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

According to both brands, in recent years, Southeast Asia has witnessed a resurgence in travel, with consumers displaying a keen interest in outdoor experiences. In Singapore particularly, travel expenditure accounted for over 37% of discretionary spending by the end of 2023, according to data from the Mastercard Economic Institute’s Economic Outlook 2024. This trend is expected to continue, with consumers in the region prioritizing discretionary spending on travel in the coming years.

Acknowledging the shifting preferences of consumers, airlines such as SIA are aiming to enhance brand loyalty via tailored loyalty schemes and partnerships with co-branded card programs. These initiatives enable cardholders to accumulate and utilize miles through routine purchases, integrating airline membership perks seamlessly into consumers' daily routines. This strategy aims to deepen connections with current members while also appealing to prospective ones.

With Mastercard's assistance, SIA intends to introduce co-branded credit and debit card initiatives throughout Southeast Asia, granting cardholders numerous perks. These benefits comprise earning KrisFlyer miles through regular spending, along with expedited accumulation and redemption options that contribute to KrisFlyer status advancements. Additionally, the partnership will broaden Mastercard's Priceless platform to encompass SIA's KrisFlyer members, granting them access to exclusive deals, international promotions, and a diverse array of curated experiences spanning categories such as dining, travel, sports, music, and entertainment on a global scale.

Ryan Pua, Divisional Vice President of Loyalty Marketing at Singapore Airlines, commented on the partnership, stating: “This exciting partnership combines the best of the Mastercard Priceless and the KrisFlyer Experiences programs. It offers our members access to a wider range of exclusive experiences across Southeast Asia, as well as attractive mile earn and burn opportunities in their everyday spend. This is part of our continuous efforts to enhance KrisFlyer’s value and give our members the best-on-ground and in-flight benefits and experiences”.

Furthermore, the collaboration will harness Mastercard's array of data and service capabilities to enrich consumer interactions. These capabilities encompass data analysis and advisory services, cutting-edge technologies like experimentation platforms, user authentication software, and payment processing systems. The initial offering introduced through this alliance earlier this year in Thailand is the UOB KrisFlyer World and UOB KrisFlyer World Elite Credit Cards. These cards provide enhanced earn rates for KrisFlyer miles and travel privileges, such as complimentary limousine services to and from airports worldwide, as well as access to airport lounges, among other advantages.
