| | APRIL 20234 In 2021, on a fine February morning, Myanmar underwent a military coup. The democratically elected members of the country's ruling party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), were deposed by the Tatmadaw--Myanmar's military--which then vested power in a military junta. Since then, the country's economy has suffered, leading to weak economic activities. This, combined with the war in Ukraine, increasing levels of domestic conflict, electricity outages, and persistent logistics and financial sector disruptions, has further driven the country to a sharp rise in imported inputs and consumer goods prices. The businesses in the country are on a roller-coaster ride. A number of foreign companies have exited Myanmar since the coup began, including oil giants TotalEnergies and Chevron and Norwegian telecoms operator Telenor. Japanese beer maker Kirin cut ties with its local brewing partner and left Myanmar days after the junta seized power. Recently, Nestlé announced that it would close its sole factory and head office in Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, as it switches to a more `sustainable' business model amid ongoing turmoil in the country. Qatari telecommunications company Ooredoo has also decided to sell its Myanmar businesses to Singapore-based Nine Communications Pte.However, many businesses and leaders have decided to stay and soldier on. This issue is about them--a bunch of leaders who have manifested resilience and soldering toward the light at the end of the tunnel. If history has taught us, it is that perseverance always wins. This issue is dedicated to influential business leaders from Myanmar.Do let us know your thoughts.
