Each quarter, economists closely monitor the performance of the retail sector, specifically tracking retail sales data, which holds significant influence over their economic decision-making. This practice stems from the recognition that the retail industry and its physical stores play a vital role in our society, impacting various aspects beyond just facilitating sales transactions. Girish Viswanathan who serves as the Head of Legal at Al Boom Marine, UAE (ABM) with his adept management has been ensuring that the organization successfully navigates legal challenges, contributing to its current success and strong position in the industry. ABM has been operating in the GCC for over 35 years and is now one of the longeststanding retail businesses in the MENA region.

Throughout its history, ABM has demonstrated an impressive ability to keep up with ever-changing market developments, which has led to the company diversifying its operations across distribution, retail, and successful e-commerce ventures throughout the MENA region. During a personal interview with our team, Girish opened up about his early experiences, current lifestyle, and his aspirations for the future.

Could you briefly outline your professional background and what led you to enter the legal field, as well as your ongoing drive as an industry leader?

I hold a Bachelor's in Law from India and am a qualified Chartered Secretary from the UK, along with being a Qualified Company Secretary from India. I spent my initial career years working within the legal and secretarial teams of listed companies in India. In 2008, I relocated to Dubai, where I joined Damac Properties' Legal and Compliance team, followed by a rewarding 11-year tenure at the Landmark Group, one of the Middle East's largest retailers. Subsequently, I became part of Network International's Legal and Corporate Governance team and presently oversee the Legal portfolio at Al Boom Marine. My motivation for entering the legal field was rooted in my belief in my argumentative skills, a persuasive personality, a strong sense of integrity instilled by my parents, and a genuine interest in case investigations. Today, as an industry leader, my driving forces include effecting positive change within organizations through fostering inclusivity, recognizing the integral role of the legal department in core corporate functions, and providing legal solutions that balance the interests of the company and its stakeholders, even in complex situations that may require a nuanced approach to the law.

Can you describe Al Boom Marine as a company and its current standing within the market?

Al Boom Marine (ABM) boasts a remarkable track record in the GCC, spanning more than three and a half decades, establishing itself as one of the most enduring retail enterprises in the MENA region. Over its history, ABM has showcased an impressive ability  to adapt to the ever-evolving market, resulting in the company branching out into distribution, retail, and highly successful e-commerce ventures across the MENA region. ABM's diverse portfolio encompasses various brands across five core divisions: Apparel, footwear and accessories, cycling, consumer electronics, optical and sports. The company has earned a formidable reputation as a dominant market leader throughout the MENA region.

Could you share insights into your leadership style? What principles or methods do you adhere to as a leader?

I adhere to a democratic style of leadership which involves giving every team member the opportunity to participate and express their views on relevant matters. This approach not only fosters engagement among employees but also ensures that their voices are heard and valued. I believe in providing training, guidance, and fostering innovation while also motivating and celebrating achievements within the team. Additionally, I organize spontaneous lunch or coffee sessions with my team, promoting interaction and rapport-building. Over my 15 years in the UAE, I've mentored and guided few individuals who  started as translators, helping them pursue further studies and specialize in their respective fields.

What obstacles did you face in becoming a successful legal field leader? How did you overcome them to achieve your career success?

Understanding and embracing the culture within our company is crucial, without compromising on our principles. One of the intriguing aspects, particularly in places like Dubai, is the opportunity to collaborate with individuals from diverse nationalities and backgrounds. It's vital to comprehend our team members and adjust our approach based on their distinct personalities. Some may require a more assertive approach to drive productivity, while others may respond better to a softer touch. Establishing positive and respectful relationships with peers is essential. Strive to be a team player rather than a boss, by conducting regular check-ins to understand and address the peers’ concerns regarding work. Operating with an open-door policy encourages them to discuss both professional and personal matters comfortably, thereby promoting a supportive work environment. Ultimately, the success of the team is a reflection of our own success.

One should upskill their interpersonal skills with business partners, as at the end of the day, relationship matters rather than taking the legal route, on any subject

Drawing from your extensive industry experience, what guidance would you offer to emerging leaders in the field?

Encourage a mindset focused on solution-driven approach and be an integral part of business partnering. Embrace innovative thinking and collaborate closely with the business to achieve organizational goals. Prioritize enhancing interpersonal skills, recognizing that fostering relationships is often more valuable than resorting to legal actions.
