PM Modi, Japanese Counterpart Suga Talk Expanding Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a meeting with Yoshihide Suga, the former Prime Minister of Japan and current Chairperson of the Japan-India Association, where they discussed various aspects of cooperation between the two countries.

PM Modi remarked that their discussions centered on fostering a closer partnership between the nations. 

"I had a productive conversation with Mr. Yoshihide Suga, former Prime Minister of Japan and Chairperson of the Japan-India Association. We highlighted several facets of India–Japan collaboration and explored ways to enhance it further. Our talks included themes of closer cooperation, particularly in technology, AI, trade, investment, and more," PM Modi shared on X. 

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba addressed the India-Japan Economic Forum, attended by CEOs and leaders from diverse fields. During his address, PM Modi emphasized India's robust economic relationship with Japan and identified areas where the partnership can strengthen in the future.

In a post on X, PM Modi mentioned, "I spoke at a business gathering in Tokyo. The participation of Prime Minister Ishiba added special significance to the event, reflecting the importance we place on our economic ties. I discussed the deep economic connections between India and Japan and outlined sectors where collaboration is expected to grow: for example, just as we have succeeded in automobiles, we aim to achieve similar success in batteries, robotics, semiconductors, shipbuilding, and nuclear energy." 

Subsequently, PM Modi is set to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, marking his inaugural summit meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba.

 

The leaders are also scheduled for a working dinner meeting. Additionally, PM Modi and Ishiba plan to visit Miyagi Prefecture on Saturday.

This marks PM Modi’s eighth visit to Japan, with his last trip occurring in May 2023. The two leaders had previously met in June 2025 during the G7 Summit held in Kananaskis, Canada, as well as at the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Vientiane, Laos, the previous year.

Upon his arrival in Tokyo, PM Modi was greeted by Japan’s Ambassador to India ONO Keiichi, India’s Ambassador to Japan Sibi George, and other high-ranking officials. 

The Indian community in Japan warmly welcomed PM Modi, celebrating his arrival with traditional cultural performances and enthusiastic cheers. PM Modi praised the Indian diaspora for their dedication to maintaining their cultural heritage while also making significant contributions to Japanese society.
