Tim Cook, the chief executive of Apple, made his way to Tokyo last week, marking his initial trip to Japan since 2022, coinciding with the company's announcement regarding the reopening of its Ginza retail location.

Cook arrived in Japan the previous day to visit the Apple Store in Tokyo’s Ginza district, which will reopen on the 26th of this month. This is Cook’s first official visit to Japan since December 2022.

On X (formerly Twitter), he said he was “really happy to be back in Japan,” adding, “The Ginza Apple store is special to us as the company’s first store outside the United States, and this reopening is a symbol of the strong bond with not only Japanese customers but also the local community.”

Cook's statements seem to mirror Japan's upcoming implementation of legislation designed to tighten oversight of smartphone software. Last year, the Fair Trade Commission established the "Act on Promotion of Competition for Smartphone Software" to oversee global technology companies, with enforcement beginning December 18. This legislation targets four key sectors: mobile operating systems, app marketplaces, web browsers, and search platforms. Apple along with its Japanese division iTunes K.K., as well as Google, have been identified as entities subject to these new regulations.

“This reopening is another incredible milestone on our journey here in Japan, and a symbol of our strong ties to customers and communities across the country. We couldn’t be more excited to open the doors to this beautifully redesigned space, share our latest products, and build on the incredible history we share”, says Tim.

“We’re so excited to reopen Apple Ginza in its original location, with a magical new experience for our customers,” says Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail and People.

“We’re thrilled to welcome everyone back to this iconic store with an all-new design and incredible local programming, where they can experience the very best of Apple’s products and services.”

Apple Ginza operates entirely on renewable energy, following the standard practice of all Apple locations. The store features an environmentally conscious design that merges sustainability with contemporary aesthetics, utilizing locally sourced materials and a dual-layer glass exterior equipped with adjustable louvers to control lighting and temperature variations during the day. The redesigned space maximizes natural light across all levels and provides terrace-style areas with views of Ginza's bustling streets. The interior showcases warm wood accents that reflect Japanese design principles.

The updated location includes tables and seating at various heights to accommodate all shoppers browsing their preferred products, along with designated service areas such as the Genius Bar for customized device setup.

Visitors can download an exclusive wallpaper, enjoy a specially curated Apple Music Ginza playlist, and register for forthcoming at Apple workshops.
