It is through knowledge sharing, mentorship, and creating platforms for others that leadership becomes truly enduring.
This belief is exemplified in the journey of Dr Binod Atreya, Managing Director of the Banking, Finance and Insurance Institute of Nepal (BFIN). Dr Binod has dedicated his career to building institutional capacity through knowledge and service. With over three decades at the Central Bank of Nepal and seven years on international assignments with the United Nations, his journey reflects a rare blend of technical expertise, leadership experience, and global perspective. Even after retiring from the Central Bank, his sense of purpose only deepened. At BFIN, he leads with a strong conviction to strengthen Nepal’s financial ecosystem through knowledge sharing, mentorship, and platform building. Although Dr Binod suffered a heart attack three years ago, the incident further fuelled his resolve to use this second chance at life with greater purpose. Today, his focus is on empowering the next generation and helping to build a future-ready financial sector through meaningful knowledge sharing.
Share a glimpse of your professional growth story.
I was born in Nepal and raised in India, where I completed my schooling and higher education in the northeastern states of Manipur and Nagaland. I earned my MBA in India and began my career as a teacher before returning to Kathmandu, my home town in Nepal.
After returning, I started my service at the Central Bank, where I began as a Training Officer. That role marked the start of a 30-year journey that spanned key responsibilities across banking supervision, policy, training, and leadership. I had the privilege of being deputed to Nepal Bank Ltd. as CEO, leading over 3,000 employees, a role that honed my understanding of institutional transformation and team management. I also served at the Ministry of Finance, where I contributed to national budget planning, gaining critical insight into fiscal policy and cross-sector collaboration.
My career then took a global turn through seven years of United Nations assignments in countries like the Maldives, Marshall Islands, and The Republic of Palau. After retiring from the Central Bank, I transitioned to institution-building. I was involved in setting up Care Rating Nepal Limited, Nepal Infrastructure Bank Limited and Emerging Nepal Limited, all aligned with Nepal’s evolving economic landscape.
Currently, I am the Managing Director of BFIN. This national-level institution was established by the banking community to strengthen the human capital of Nepal’s financial sector.
What methods do you employ to assist the leadership team in enhancing their abilities?
At BFIN, our clients primarily include banks, financial institutions, and government agencies. We engage with professionals at all levels, from CEOs and board members to ministers, secretaries, and frontline employees. Given this high-level engagement, we place strong emphasis on responsiveness, precision, and quality.
In a competitive environment, speed matters. Whether it’s responding to a training request or preparing for an international conference, our team operates on the philosophy that “speed wins the race”. For instance, if a bank requests a proposal today, we strive to deliver it by the same day or latest by the next morning.
Teamwork is central to everything we do. We hold regular meetings and encourage open communication, especially when planning major conferences. We brainstorm together to identify impactful speakers and relevant topics. Our events have featured distinguished experts from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Germany, Australia and beyond.
We also cultivate a learning-oriented culture. I urge my team to observe how global leaders communicate and present, and to reflect on what they can apply in their own roles. What matters most to me is empowering the team. They bring young energy, fresh ideas, and a stronger grasp of emerging digital trends. While I provide the strategic direction, I ensure they have the freedom to grow into confident leaders.
My approach is guided by a few core principles, ‘empower others, be quick, stay focused, and keep learning’. These values guide not just how we operate, but how we lead.
What is the future destination you are heading towards?
The future I am working toward is to establish BFIN as a globally recognized hub for financial knowledge, training, and leadership development. My vision is to make Nepal a destination for international financial learning, where experts, executives, and emerging professionals from around the world come together to share insights, build skills, and collaborate.

In just seven years, we’ve made strong progress despite disruptions like the pandemic. We’ve built partnerships with international institutions such as Victoria University in Australia and launched programs across countries including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Thailand, and now Canada. This global footprint is the foundation on which I intend to expand further.
We’ve already initiated training programs for international delegates in Kathmandu and are actively promoting them through our networks and digital platforms.
What advice would you give to aspiring leaders in the field?
Although I’m retired, I'm not tired. Retirement has simply opened new doors for meaningful work, and that’s the first message I want to share.
My core advice to today’s youth and emerging leaders is to adopt a growth mindset. Equally important is the power of positivity. I often tell my team that if your thoughts are positive, your actions follow suit. Yes, failure may come your way, but if you can learn from failure, then success is never far behind.
I also believe that change is the only constant. We must learn to navigate uncertainty by embracing change, adapting to it, and moving forward with resilience.
