Karan Kumar Chaudhary
Managing Director
The invention of automobiles marks a pivotal moment in human history, revolutionizing transportation and reshaping societies worldwide. Today, as we look beyond even the Over-The-Air (OTA) updates of electric vehicles, modern-day automobiles have almost found a reliable alternative to fuel-powered engines. However, something that hasn't changed is the need for proper lubrication, which is crucial to minimize friction and ensure performance. In a growing nation like Nepal, the demand for automobiles and lubricants is understandably rising, and the country relies heavily on imports to meet its needs. While addressing this gap, CG Holdings, a homegrown company, is making a significant impact under the leadership of Karan Kumar Chaudhary, who is playing a key role in strengthening the local market and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
Karan brings extensive industry expertise and a strong passion for the automotive sector. He combines strategic leadership with hands-on engagement across diverse CG Holdings sectors, from automobiles and lubricants to education, real estate, retail, and Alcho-Bev. His holistic business approach promotes synergy and fuels innovation. Committed to sustainable, future-focused growth, Karan emphasizes digital transformation, talent development, and cross-sector collaboration. His unique ability to align vision with execution positions him as a progressive leader driving change in Nepal’s evolving business landscape. We are delighted to have Karan with us for an exclusive conversation.
How did you achieve such an attractive trajectory of professional growth? What was the role played by NADA?
As I grew within the business, my growth was not just personal, it was deeply professional as well. I started at a very young age, and while youth and energy were definitely on my side, what I truly needed, and developed over time, were perseverance and patience. These qualities evolved naturally as I took on different roles and responsibilities.
While I would not say that NADA (he became the youngest President in the history of NADA, the Automobiles Association of Nepal in 2023) alone shaped all my decision-making abilities for the company, it certainly played a significant role in strengthening my resilience and sharpening my leadership skills. Running a business in Nepal comes with unique challenges, because the environment is dynamic and often volatile. With political instability and frequent policy changes, making timely yet well-considered decisions becomes crucial. Over time, I have learned that only when your decisions are truly tested will you know whether you are on the right path. That said, I also understand the weight of the decisions I make and the profound impact they have on the direction of the business.
How would you define your leadership style?
To be honest, I don’t believe in autocratic leadership. I see myself more as a Social Democrat-style leader. I value advice and welcome constructive criticism, but I also have a clear sense of direction and purpose. I always strive to ensure that decisions are driven from within and guided by both intuition and insight. Ideally, I prefer when ideas come from the team, and I strongly encourage that, because the idea that comes from the team has the added advantage of ownership. But when they don’t, I make it a point to seek the answers from within the team itself, encouraging everyone to be involved in the process.
How do you keep up with the evolving market trends?
For me, the key to growth has been active participation in training programs and seminars and being involved in various professional and social groups, such as EO and similar communities here in Nepal. I am also a regular attendee and member of the FORBES Conference, especially the sessions involving CEOs, which I find incredibly insightful. However, my most valuable learning comes from listening to and reading about others’ experiences. I believe that no idea is ever truly final, there’s always room to adapt and evolve. It is all about having the right mindset and finding practical ways to make things work in whatever form suits you best.

How do you see your future road map going forward?
I see myself committed to the long haul, as I have been deeply involved in our family business for quite some time, with no intention of deviating from this path. In fact, I am excited about continuing to contribute to its growth. With the emerging opportunities and new avenues opening up in Nepal, I envision the company scaling significantly in the coming years. I firmly believe we have the potential to become one of the leading conglomerates in South Asia. Looking ahead, our goal is to establish a strong and recognizable presence not just regionally but on a global stage.
From your experience, could you share some advice for budding industry leaders?
There was a time when becoming a unicorn was a rare achievement, perhaps one in ten promising businesses. Today, it feels more like one in a thousand. While ideas get generated at an incredible pace, they often fail to align with real market demand. In my view, for an idea to truly succeed, it needs more than just potential, it also needs complete dedication. I have been able to sustain and grow this business because I remain fully invested, physically, emotionally, and mentally. As long as you give your Heart & soul and stay resilient, I believe you stand a strong chance of building something meaningful and lasting.
