OpenAI Lists Google as Cloud Partner to Meet Computing Capacity Demand

OpenAI has included Alphabet's Google Cloud among its suppliers to meet escalating demands for computing capacity, according to an updated list published on the ChatGPT maker's website.
The artificial-intelligence giant also relies on services from Microsoft, Oracle, and CoreWeave.
The deal with Google, finalized in May after months of discussions, accoridng to reports.
The arrangement underscores how massive computing demands to train and deploy AI models are reshaping the competitive dynamics in AI.
Additionally, it marks OpenAI's latest move to diversify its compute sources beyond its major supporter Microsoft, including its high-profile Stargate data centre project.
Earlier this year, OpenAI partnered with SoftBank and Oracle on the $500 billion Stargate infrastructure program and signed multi-billion-dollar agreements with CoreWeave to bolster computing capacity.

The partnership with Google is the latest of several maneuvers made by OpenAI to reduce its dependency on Microsoft whose Azure cloud service had served as the ChatGPT maker's exclusive data center infrastructure provider until January.
Google and OpenAI discussed an arrangement for months but were previously blocked from signing a deal due to OpenAI's lock-in with Microsoft.
Furthermore, it has been stated that OpenAI is developing its own web browser, which it may name Aura. It is anticipated that the browser would mostly rely on artificial intelligence to help users, paving the way for new competition with Google and other industry titans.
It is thought that Chromium, the same open-source framework that underpins Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, was used to create the browser. This would make it easier for OpenAI to distribute it on platforms including Windows, macOS, and mobile. The browser is expected to offer functionality beyond standard search and navigation by fusing AI capabilities with conventional surfing tools, according to reports.

In the upcoming weeks, the browser is anticipated to launch. In a market long dominated by Google Chrome, which now holds more than 65 percent of the browser market, OpenAI might make substantial progress if it can draw in some of ChatGPT's 500 million weekly users. Aura may try to compete with Chrome, which is also a significant player in Google's advertising business by gathering data that aids in ad targeting, particularly if AI agents are able to do browsing tasks on their own.
