Indonesia Reaffirms Paris Agreement Pledge Despite US Withdrawal

imgEnvironment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq provided assurance to the global community regarding Indonesia's steadfast dedication to enforcing climate change initiatives according to the guidelines set forth in the Paris Agreement, despite the departure of a prominent nation from the accord.

It is of utmost importance that we closely adhere to the provisions established in the Paris Agreement. It would be unwise for us to allow the accord, a result of years of united global determination, to crumble solely due to the withdrawal of one or two major powers," he remarked.

The minister delivered the statement during the ESG Sustainability Forum 2026 in Jakarta, with his comments being widely understood to allude to the official withdrawal of the US from the agreement in January of this year.

“We cannot afford to let our strong determination to build resilience against climate change wane. The treaty withdrawal of a superpower should not deter our spirit,” Nurofiq reiterated.

He emphasized the significance of the Paris Agreement, which Indonesia officially accepted in 2016, highlighting the nation's susceptibility to the effects of climate change and environmental decline.

As an extensive archipelagic country, Indonesia is exposed to increased vulnerabilities stemming from severe weather occurrences, such as cyclones near the equator, that present hydro-meteorological hazards across multiple areas.

Nurofiq additionally highlighted the potential hazards associated with the diminishing extent of mangrove forests along the northern shoreline of Java. He cautioned that the concerning pattern has the potential to result in coastal erosion, posing a threat to the populations of economically important creatures like crabs and shrimp in local communities.

Recognizing these potential risks, he mentioned that the Indonesian government has implemented various measures to combat climate change in accordance with the Paris Agreement. These actions include the issuance of a presidential regulation on the economic evaluation of carbon and the implementation of national controls on greenhouse gas emissions.

“The presidential regulation is designed to help us quantify our greenhouse gas emission reduction efforts into specific units, which can then be converted into tangible economic value in a credible manner,” he concludes.
