Indonesia Pushes Women-led MSMEs into UK, European Markets

The Ministry of Trade has aided women entrepreneurs in Indonesia who lead micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to engage in the Spring Fair 2026 in Birmingham, UK, as a means of broadening their global market presence.

Director General of National Export Promotion Fajarini Puntodewi announced that the ministry has presented nine indigenous brands at the ongoing trade exhibition scheduled from February 1 to 4.

These brands showcase a diverse array of offerings spanning fashion, accessories, textiles, apparel, and home furnishings.

“Through participation in this exhibition, women-led MSMEs are expected to build long-term business partnerships, expand into the British and European markets, seize new sales opportunities, and strengthen their capacity to meet international standards,” Puntodewi says.

She pointed out that the Ministry of Trade acknowledges the important contribution of women in Indonesia's economy and creative sectors, highlighting that women oversee over 70 percent of MSMEs across the country.

Puntodewi expressed optimism regarding the potential for heightened engagement in global trade shows to enhance export levels of MSMEs and underscore the significance of women entrepreneurs in advancing equitable trade practices.

 

In the meantime, Desra Percaya, the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK, Ireland, and the International Maritime Organization, emphasized the significance of fostering cooperation among various parties to assist women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises in gaining access to foreign markets.

Indonesia and the UK reported a bilateral trade value of $2.41 billion from January to November 2025. Within that timeframe, Indonesia sold goods worth $1.43 billion to the UK. The total bilateral trade volume reached $2.78 billion in 2024.

“It is essential to build synergy among the government, international institutions, and strategic partners to provide women-led MSMEs with broader opportunities to grow and compete globally”, he says.

Indonesia primarily exports iron and steel products, footwear, electrical machinery and equipment, wood products, and mechanical appliances to the UK. Conversely, imports from the UK are mainly vehicles and their parts, optical devices, and pharmaceutical products.
