Asia’s Top 8 Automotive Leaders Driving the Future of Mobility

Separator

imageBuying a vehicle is an emotion for some, a passion for others, and a necessity for many. The automotive sector has long been dominated by legacy brands such as Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen Group, and Tesla. Today, however, the automobile represents far more than mobility; it reflects the rapid evolution of technology, consumer preferences, and the global automotive landscape.

Asia’s automotive industry has entered 2026 at a pivotal moment, with China driving global production and exports, India emerging as a key growth engine, and Southeast Asia accelerating its shift toward electrified mobility. According to reports, China exported 3.5 million passenger cars in the first five months of 2026, up 69.6 percent year over year, while Chinese-origin brands are projected to account for 27.4 percent of global vehicle production.

India’s automotive volume grew 19percent in 1H 2026, while EV sales surged 75percent in 2025. Across ASEAN-6, industry volume rose 11percent in 1H 2026, Chinese OEMs increased their market share to 15.7percent, and EV penetration reached 32percent.

As AI, connected technologies, software-defined vehicles, and new supply-chain models reshape mobility; leadership is becoming the defining advantage. The leaders shaping Asia’s automotive future must combine innovation with scale, resilience with agility, and growth with sustainability.

Here’s a look at Asia’s top automotive leaders who are rewriting the future of mobility through their vision and execution.

Wang Chuanfu, Chairman & President, BYD (China)

imageWang Chuanfu has played a defining role in transforming BYD from a battery-focused company into a global automotive and new-energy technology powerhouse. An engineer by training, Wang founded Shenzhen BYD Industrial Co. in 1995 after gaining experience in nonferrous metals research and battery manufacturing.

Technology and innovation have remained central to his leadership philosophy. Rather than treating electrification as a temporary industry trend, Wang recognized the strategic importance of developing core technologies that could support long-term competitiveness.

Under his leadership, BYD expanded into automobiles, new energy, rail transit, and electronics, while establishing itself as one of China's leading electric-vehicle manufacturers. His emphasis on technological development and rapid decision-making has enabled the company to respond to the accelerating shift toward electric mobility.

Wang's approach also demonstrates the importance of vertical integration in the new-energy vehicle industry. Battery technology, electric drivetrains, power electronics, and vehicle systems have become critical competitive differentiators.

His leadership reflects a broader shift in automotive strategy, where companies increasingly need to control or develop critical technologies rather than rely entirely on external suppliers.

By combining engineering expertise with entrepreneurial vision, Wang has helped position BYD as a major global player in sustainable mobility and demonstrated how technology-led leadership can reshape an entire industry.

Kenta Kon, President & CEO, Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan)

imageKenta Kon brings more than three decades of experience at Toyota to his role as President and CEO. He joined the company in 1991 after graduating from Tohoku University with a degree in economics and built his career across Toyota's accounting and finance functions.

Before becoming CEO, Kon served as Chief Financial Officer, giving him extensive experience in financial management, capital allocation, and strategic decision-making. This background is particularly valuable as Toyota navigates an industry requiring enormous investments in electrification, software, artificial intelligence, and next-generation mobility technologies.

Toyota's ambitions increasingly extend beyond conventional vehicle manufacturing. Through initiatives such as Woven by Toyota, the company is exploring software, connected mobility, and broader technology-driven mobility solutions.

For Kon, leadership involves balancing innovation with financial discipline. Automotive companies must invest aggressively in future technologies while maintaining profitability and protecting the strength of their existing businesses.

His experience within Toyota's financial and operational structures provides a perspective grounded in long-term value creation. At a time when the industry faces uncertainty over technology adoption, consumer demand, and powertrain strategies, disciplined leadership will be essential.

José Muñoz, President & CEO, Hyundai Motor Company (South Korea)

imageJosé Muñoz has established himself as a global automotive leader with a strong focus on growth, operational excellence, customer experience, and technology. As President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, he oversees the company's global operations as well as the Hyundai and Genesis brands.

His appointment was historic, making him the first non-Korean to lead the global automotive business of a major Korean conglomerate.

Muñoz joined Hyundai in 2019 as President and Global Chief Operating Officer and President and CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor North America. He played a significant role in strengthening sales, market share, dealer profitability, and brand performance.

His leadership extends beyond products. Muñoz places considerable emphasis on empowering employees, developing talent, strengthening dealer relationships, improving customer satisfaction, and building strategic partnerships.

Technology is another key component of Hyundai's future. The company is investing across electric vehicles, hybrid powertrains, hydrogen, autonomous driving, robotics, artificial intelligence, and smart-city technologies.

Muñoz has also overseen significant investments in manufacturing and battery capabilities, particularly in the United States. These investments demonstrate his belief that automotive competitiveness depends on building strong local ecosystems alongside global capabilities.

His international experience across several automotive companies has equipped him to manage complex markets and changing consumer expectations.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles ( India)

imageShailesh Chandra's leadership journey reflects the evolution of India's automotive industry. He joined Tata Motors in 1995 as a production manager and subsequently held leadership positions across multiple functions.

His experience at the Tata Group Strategy Office between 2013 and 2016 further strengthened his strategic perspective. After returning to Tata Motors, he led Corporate Strategy and Business Transformation, focusing on operational excellence and future readiness.

Chandra has been particularly influential in Tata Motors' passenger vehicle and electric-vehicle businesses. As India's automotive market moves toward cleaner mobility, the challenge is not simply to introduce electric vehicles but to make them attractive, accessible, reliable, and commercially sustainable.

His leadership has contributed to Tata Motors' efforts to establish a stronger presence in India's rapidly developing EV market while strengthening its passenger vehicle portfolio.

Beyond Tata Motors, Chandra has contributed to the broader automotive ecosystem through his leadership roles in industry organizations. As President of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, he has been involved in discussions around sustainable mobility and India's global automotive competitiveness.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director & CEO – Auto & Farm Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra (India)

imageRajesh Jejurikar brings a distinctive combination of marketing, automotive, and farm-equipment experience to his leadership role at Mahindra & Mahindra.

He joined Mahindra in 2000 as Vice President – Marketing for the Auto Sector and progressed through several leadership positions, including Chief Executive of the Automotive Division and President of the Farm Equipment Sector. In 2020, he became Executive Director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sectors.

His diverse background has helped him develop a strong understanding of customers, brands, products, and markets. This perspective has been valuable as Mahindra pursues growth in both traditional automotive segments and emerging mobility technologies.

Electric mobility is a major part of the company's future strategy. Jejurikar has been instrumental in shaping Mahindra's EV roadmap and strengthening its ambition to compete in the rapidly expanding electric passenger vehicle market.

At the same time, his leadership recognizes the importance of maintaining Mahindra's established strengths in utility vehicles and agricultural equipment.

Jejurikar's approach illustrates that successful transformation requires more than technological investment. Companies must translate innovation into products that customers understand, trust, and want to purchase.

His recognition through several industry leadership awards reflects his contribution to Mahindra's growth and future-oriented strategy.
