On the Axonic Health platform, a pioneering healthcare technology company, a patient voiced concern to the AI doctor: “Saya mengalami sakit perut sejak semalam” (I have had stomach pain since yesterday). What followed was an extraordinary interaction and a strong testament to the global advancement of AI in healthcare. The AI doctor’s avatar responded with impressive fluency in Malay, not only engaging naturally but also demonstrating deep investigative skills and thoughtful recommendations akin to a seasoned medical professional. Adding to the astonishment, when asked, the AI seamlessly transitioned to English, further showcasing its advanced capabilities.

Integrating AI into healthcare is truly transformative. As one of the fastest-growing healthcare ecosystems globally, Singapore must be at the forefront of this revolution. Whether through machine learning in medicine, AI-powered diagnostics, telemedicine, predictive analytics, AI-driven drug discovery, or medical imaging AI, the country has the potential to lead the way in shaping the future of AI-driven healthcare. There are 1,561 healthcare startups in Singapore currently, with 127 funded and 77 having secured Series A+ funding. By 2030, Singapore's healthcare industry is projected to reach $44 billion, driven by factors such as medical tourism and an aging population. Additionally, the country's national health expenditure could rise to $43 billion, accounting for up to 9 percent of GDP. Government healthcare spending alone is expected to hit $30 billion annually by that time. In other words, the opportunities are humongous. In this special yearly issue, we explore the stories of some of the healthcare startup leaders in Singapore who are embracing this opportunity.
