Kazakhstan, the largest landlocked nation in the world, is one of the fastest-developing countries in Central Asia, with a diversified economy driven by mining, oil, gas, and agriculture. Entrepreneurs like Arman Tuktin, Director of Distritech, are pivotal in supporting the nation's industrial growth and international integration by serving key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and oil.

With over 20 years of experience in the distribution of analytical laboratory equipment, Arman began his career at Mettler Toledo in 1998 as a service engineer. He quickly rose through the ranks to become the General Director of Mettler Toledo Central Asia, overseeing operations across eight countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Later, he founded his own company, Distritech, expanding its reach to nine countries, including Mongolia. Today, Arman leads three companies, namely Distritech, which supplies analytical equipment, Kunststoffe, a manufacturer of window profiles, and Distrilab, which produces laboratory furniture.

In an insightful conversation with CEO Insights Asia magazine, Arman shares his strategies, vision for the future, and more. Let’s dive in.

What motivates you in your daily routine?

I am driven by a passion to innovate and push Central Asia forward, especially in a region where cutting-edge technologies often arrive more slowly than in countries like China, India, or Europe. My goal is to provide businesses and organizations with high-quality, up-to-date equipment and expert service. Every day, I strive for excellence, knowing that my work helps bridge the technological gap and contributes to the region’s growth and prosperity.

What have been the major milestones of your professional journey?

Several key moments have shaped my career and personal growth. One of the most significant was my time at Mettler Toledo, a renowned Swiss-American company specializing in laboratory analytical equipment. My first professional experience there was a strong foundation for my career. After just three years, I was honored to be named the world’s best sales manager. Receiving a special award, a 40,000-year-old meteorite from Canada, from the company’s Vice President was a remarkable boost to my confidence.

Another defining moment was earning my MBA from Maastricht Business School. This experience deepened my understanding of global strategies, marketing, and international business, which has been invaluable as I’ve taken on new roles and challenges.

On a personal level, being a father to two sons has been a tremendous motivator. Fatherhood pushes me to grow, set an example for my children, and instill values of resilience, integrity, and determination in them.

I’ve learned something new and achieved something significant every year of my journey. While I’ve celebrated work milestones, this year has also brought personal sorrow with the loss of my father after a long illness. It’s been a reminder of the importance of balancing personal relationships with professional success.

How do you lead and guide your team, and what is your leadership style?

My leadership approach centers around building a strong, motivated team by assigning meaningful tasks and ensuring fair compensation. Beyond monetary rewards, I place a high value on team-building opportunities, education, and training. For instance, we gather regularly throughout the year to celebrate important milestones, fostering a sense of unity. These gatherings help strengthen team bonds and create a family-like atmosphere.

I also believe it’s crucial to give everyone a voice. At the end of each year, we hold meetings where everyone can share ideas and opinions. This approach ensures that all team members feel respected and heard, creating a collaborative environment that promotes achievement and fosters a sense of community.

What is the future roadmap you have planned for your professional journey?

In the next five years, I aim to start a new manufacturing business focused on producing HPL materials, which are essential for the construction and furniture industries. I plan to launch the project next year, with the new facility expected to be operational within 18 to 24 months. Once established, I hope to expand my knowledge and contribute to the growth of these sectors.

Based on your experience, what advice would you give to aspiring leaders in your industry?

To aspiring leaders, I would say, ‘treat business like an art’. It requires creativity, passion, and the drive to turn ideas into reality. Be prepared to make sacrifices, but also embrace the excitement of creating something innovative and effective.

Arman Tuktin holds a degree in analytical chemistry from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and a Master’s in Marketing from Maastricht School of Management. His company, Distritech, specializes in providing laboratory equipment and furniture for industries including oil and gas, petrochemicals, mining and metallurgy, pharmaceuticals, food and textiles, bioanalytical labs, environmental research, and other research institutes across Central Asia.
