While Dermatology focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing the conditions related to the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes, today, Aesthetic medicine plays a more advanced role in enhancing skin appearance and promoting a more youthful look. This growing demand has led to a surge in the need for well-trained and experienced skin and aesthetic physicians.

The growth of My Clinic, a Malaysian skin, aesthetic, and laser treatment clinic, exemplifies this demand under Dr Hoe Yut Hung, its Medical Director. With nearly two decades of experience as a medical doctor, Dr Hoe specializes in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. His passion for aesthetic medicine began during his undergraduate years, and he went on to chisel his experience at one of Malaysia’s largest aesthetic centers before establishing his own state-of-the-art facility in 2014.

He is also an alumnus of prestigious institutions like the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, India, Cardiff University, UK, and the Academy of Aesthetic Medicine, US. We are pleased to have him with us for an exclusive interview.

What quality control measures have you implemented in the practice to ensure consistent and high-quality patient care?

We strongly emphasize quality by ensuring that our doctors are highly trained and well-qualified to perform all procedures safely and effectively. This focus helps us minimize complications and deliver the best possible patient outcomes. To maintain high standards, we conduct training sessions and seminars almost every month, typically two to three sessions, to keep our doctors up-to-date.

Only after they have demonstrated full competence can they perform procedures independently. Similarly, our support staff, including therapists and beauticians, is also held to high standards. They hold international certifications and are well-equipped to handle various facial and skincare treatments professionally.

The range of equipment in aesthetic medicine often evolves rapidly. How do you ensure that your clients receive the full benefits?

We constantly stay updated on the latest machines, devices, and treatment protocols. However, before introducing new treatments, we ensure that all our staff undergo thorough hands-on training and theoretical instruction to fully understand the equipment and procedures. I also hold regular meetings with my team, twice a month, to gather feedback from clinic managers across the country.

They travel from various regions, including Johor Bahru, Kota Bahru, Terengganu, and other states, to our headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. These full-day meetings provide a platform to discuss challenges faced in clinical practice and collaboratively find solutions as a unified team.

How do you guarantee that the devices constantly function at optimum standards?

We regularly have engineers inspect and calibrate our machines to ensure they function at optimal standards. All the equipment we use are FDA-approved. Most of our devices are sourced from the United States, while others come from Germany, various European countries, and South Korea. The Korean machines we use are also FDA- and TGA-approved. We strictly avoid using uncertified or non-CE marked machines, especially those lacking scientific backing or clinical publications.

We never engage in trial-and-error on our patients. Every device we invest in comes from a reputable manufacturer with a strong track record and is supported by published research and clinical studies to ensure safety and proven results.

As a medical leader, how do you keep up with industry trends?

I actively participate in numerous seminars and conferences, such as IMCAS, MSA Malaysia, and international platforms like AMWC in the UK and conferences in Monaco. These events keep us informed about the latest advancements in aesthetic medicine. Additionally, I regularly review online journal publications to stay updated on emerging techniques and innovations.

Before adopting any new technology or treatment, we conduct internal testing and evaluations to ensure its safety and efficacy. We never apply unproven methods directly on patients. I also receive frequent updates from research publications, email newsletters, and product specialists in Malaysia who keep me informed about the latest equipment and technologies.

Altogether, this combination of conferences, publications, and supplier updates helps us stay current and continually improve our practice.

What is your advice to the upcoming leaders in aesthetic medicine?

I truly emphasize the importance of listening to your staff. Everyone has a unique personality, some may be quiet and reserved, while others are more outspoken. As a leader, I believe in leading through guidance rather than compulsion. Rather than using harsh words, I communicate respectfully and supportively. Listening is a critical part of leadership. When issues arise, we resolve them together as a team.

My goal is to create a positive work environment where staff, whether managers, therapists, or others, feel comfortable, valued, and not pressured. When people are genuinely happy to come to work, it reflects in their performance, commitment, and, ultimately, the business's success.
