Japan, known for its unique blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge technology, has long been a leader in various sectors, including energy. Hokkaido University, located in the northern part of Japan, is one of the country’s prestigious institutions, known for its excellence in research and development. Its alumni network has made significant contributions to a wide array of industries, with leaders who have impacted both the local and global economies. Among these influential alumni is Keisuke Ito, the Director of Super Energy. After completing his Master's degree at Hokkaido University’s Graduate School, Keisuke Ito began his career at Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd. in 2003. Over the course of his 22-year tenure, he made notable contributions to the energy sector. In the first 11 years of his career, Keisuke Ito focused on the expansion of city gas in the Kanto region. As a project leader, he played a crucial role in the technical sales of industrial natural gas and was instrumental in penetrating uncharted areas.

In the latter half of his career, Keisuke Ito’s professional journey took him overseas. He was first stationed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he served as the director of an invested company. His leadership was key in managing dividends and spearheading the establishment of new offices in Vietnam and Indonesia. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in developing new business opportunities in the Philippines.

Keisuke Ito's career culminated with his assignment in Indonesia, where he led the successful investment in a business alliance between two gas sales companies. Today, he is the sole Japanese director at PT. Super Energy Tbk., where he continues to make significant contributions to the company's management. His experience and leadership highlight the global reach and influence of Hokkaido University alumni in the energy sector. Let’s dive in to know more.

Could you share the most valuable lesson or experience you gained from Hokkaido University Japan?

At Hokkaido University, the most valuable experience I had was learning to think logically and persistently question the world around me. My research in quantum chemistry, particularly focusing on the fluorescence excitation relaxation process of an aromatic compound in the femtosecond (10^-15 sec) domain, helped me refine my analytical skills. Additionally, my Master's research on the mechanism of conductive polymers was crucial in developing my problem-solving abilities.

Could you illustrate the accessibility of faculty to students at Hokkaido University Japan?

At Hokkaido University, faculty members were highly accessible and actively engaged with students, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment. The university encouraged open communication through laboratory seminars and informal social gatherings, where students could freely interact with professors. These interactions were invaluable in creating a strong sense of community and ensuring that students felt comfortable seeking guidance or discussing ideas. The faculty’s openness and willingness to mentor allowed students to receive personalized support throughout their academic journeys, contributing to a productive and enriching learning experience.

How have you made use of the alumni network while you were a student or after graduating?

While working for a local company in Indonesia, I haven’t had direct business interactions through the alumni network. However, encountering fellow alumni in Southeast Asia has been incredibly valuable. These connections foster a sense of camaraderie and have facilitated the exchange of information and ideas. Being part of the alumni network has allowed me to build strong relationships with others in the region, offering both professional and personal support. The shared background and experiences with fellow graduates have made it easier to collaborate and stay informed about industry developments, even if our business ventures are not directly linked.

What memory stands out to you the most from your experiences at Hokkaido University Japan?

One of the most memorable experiences at Hokkaido University came during my undergraduate years when I struggled to balance part-time work with my research. This imbalance affected my ability to achieve the desired research outcomes, and at one point, my graduate school admission was in doubt. However, my professor's stern advice pushed me to refocus and persevere. Thanks to that, I successfully gained admission to the graduate program, completed my Master's degree, and even received job offers from major companies despite the tough market conditions. This period taught me the importance of resilience and determination, shaping my ability to confront challenges head-on.

Define your leadership approach. What are the guidelines or methodologies you follow as a leader? What is the motivation that fuels your daily routines?

My leadership approach focuses on inspiring the team and guiding the organization toward success by setting a clear vision and leading by example. I believe in sharing this vision and aligning actions to demonstrate it. I form project teams that capitalize on each member's strengths to work towards shared goals. I also encourage autonomy by delegating responsibilities and fostering trust within the team. Additionally, I promote organizational growth through a culture of continuous learning and improvement, ensuring the team remains adaptable and focused on achieving long-term success.

My daily motivation comes from a deep passion to support Indonesia's economic growth through the energy sector, as well as the satisfaction of overcoming challenges and achieving goals alongside my team in new projects.

What is the future destination you are heading towards?

My future goal is to drive sustainable growth in Indonesia's energy market while making a positive impact on the local community. Building on our strength in CNG supply, we aim to reduce environmental impact and assist in the country's fuel subsidy reduction by establishing a supply system from our newly constructed mini LNG plant. Guided by the motto "boys be ambitious", I am committed to contributing passionately to addressing social issues and improving people's lives. Additionally, I strive to foster the sustainable development of the organization by nurturing the next generation of leaders.
