Exteriors and interiors are two integral aspects of architectural design, complementing each other. Premier landscape architects play a key role in achieving this balance. In the Philippines, the shortage of local expertise often pushes developers to rely on foreign landscape architects, often leading to challenges such as the lack of cultural comprehension, price sensitivity, and differences in aesthetic perceptions. Clarq Landscape Design, a Philippines-based firm, is bridging this gap under the aegis of Vincent T. Lim, the Chief Landscape Architect, by distinguishing itself by providing world-class exterior design experience imbued with local expertise.

With nearly two decades of experience in design and construction, particularly in landscape architecture, Vincent has seamlessly integrated his global insights into a career dedicated to creating spaces that inspire and uplift. His expertise lies in crafting outdoor environments that balance aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, focusing on incorporating natural elements into urban spaces and fostering harmony and livability. Beyond his architectural contributions, he is the Founder of Balcony & Gardens (Manila) and serves as the CEO of Clarq Construction & Development Corp. Today, we are excited to have Vincent with us for an exclusive discussion.

What have been some of the biggest learnings in your journey that fuel your entrepreneurial spirit?

One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of aligning roles with individual strengths. In creative fields like design, not everyone excels at everything, and that’s okay. What matters is recognizing and supporting diverse talents. As our team grew to 137 members, and we opened a new office in Sydney, I saw the need for structured systems. What once worked organically now relies on well-defined processes, documentation, and standards to ensure quality at scale.

At Clarq, we’ve built workflows that maintain consistency while nurturing creativity. We invest in our people through leadership training, advanced design tools, presentation skills, and team-building efforts to foster collaboration.

Most of our work comes from referrals, earned through integrity, reliability, and shared values. We now choose to work only with clients whose principles align with ours, creating meaningful, results-driven partnerships.

Excellence and kindness are not mutually exclusive

What are your thoughts on incorporating Gen Z into the workforce?

At first, adapting to the new generation of hires, especially Gen Z and the emerging Gen Alpha, was a challenge. However, we have come to accept that this shift is essential; it has been both humbling and eye-opening. We now deeply appreciate Gen Z’s intelligence, purpose-driven mindset, and ability to thrive when mentored rather than micromanaged. Their approach differs from the hierarchical management styles we once knew, requiring more empathy, collaboration, and adaptability. When they feel valued and aligned with meaningful work, whether in tech, automation, or sustainability, they take true ownership. Challenges remain, particularly around work-life balance, but we are learning to  maintain high standards while offering flexibility. This transition has reinforced the importance of building a workplace that nurtures both innovation and engagement.

How do you keep yourself up to date with the ongoing industry trends?

I stay updated by closely following global news, especially how geopolitics shapes development trends. I also explore emerging themes using AI tools, which often inform our SWOT analyses. Regular interactions with developers, contractors, and suppliers help me stay aware of market shifts—like product demand, active regions, and evolving client needs. Insights from friends abroad also reveal crossborder opportunities. While we attend global expos for broader perspectives, our real advantage comes from direct engagement with industry influencers. Lifelong learning is a core focus—I pursue executive programs at institutions like Harvard and MIT and  foster a culture of knowledge sharing within our team. Currently, I’m spearheading a department dedicated to workflow optimization, AI integration, and upskilling. This keeps our capabilities aligned with evolving industry standards. Travel is also a powerful source of inspiration, expanding my perspective and grounding innovation in real-world, culturally diverse experiences.

What roadmap have you envisioned for yourself for the next five years?

I take a leading role in shaping the future of landscape and public space design in the Philippines. With our growing network, project scale, and client trust, we are in a unique position to drive lasting, positive change. That comes with a responsibilityto influence clients toward genuine sustainability, not just performativity green efforts. We want to promote real reforestation using native species and embed permaculture principles into our work. More than being seen as a thought leader, I aim to deliver tangible results that enhance public life. Parks and amenity spaces, especially for children, deserve thoughtful design. Creating environments that foster joy, inclusion, and well-being is what keeps me committed and inspired. I want to set new benchmarks in how Filipino design can lead responsibly and with heart.

What piece of advice do you give to budding leaders?

For emerging leaders, patience is essential. Progress in this field is gradual—projects can take years, and meaningful impact takes time to unfold. It’s important to stay grounded, committed to your vision, and trust the journey. True leadership isn’t just about passion; it’s also about how we treat others. I’ve been fortunate to have my values of integrity and leadership recognized—through magazine features, CNN interviews, and speaking engagements like VCDC’s Future Perfect. But beyond recognition, it’s about making a real difference. Excellence and kindness can coexist. In high-pressure environments, people naturally follow those who lead with empathy and composure. Stay curious, remain open to growth, and, most importantly, believe in yourself. Confidence rooted in self-awareness, not ego, is powerful. Let your belief in your potential guide your path and be the foundation of the leader you’re becoming.
