The Urban Planning and Permits Centre (UPPC) in Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has released a series of guidelines to govern industrial building facades in the emirate.

These guidelines set standardized criteria for building facades that face streets and public spaces, aiming to enhance the urban environment in industrial zones, improve safety for facilities, and facilitate effective operations while addressing the varied activities and requirements of the sector.

The 'Guidelines for Regulating Industrial Building Facades in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi' establish criteria for the architectural design and upkeep of industrial building facades, including signage, entrances, service areas, and storage spaces, in addition to safety and fire prevention standards.

They also concentrate on enhancing the look of industrial zones, enabling pedestrian flow, improving the environment for employees and residents, and promoting the use of eco-friendly materials that match the local climate and the characteristics of industrial operations.

Abdulla Mohamed Alblooshi, Director General of the UPPC says, “Industrial areas play an important role in supporting Abu Dhabi’s economy and meeting the needs of different business sectors. Regulating industrial building facades forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the urban environment in these areas, enhance facility safety and take account of the nature of economic activities and their operational requirements”.

“The guidelines provide property owners and investors with clear standards for upgrading and maintaining their building facades in line with defined requirements, while recognising differences in building conditions and uses. Beginning implementation in Mussafah marks a step towards improving the urban environment of industrial areas, supporting the sustainability of their activities and their contribution to the Emirate’s economy”, he adds.

These standards aid broader initiatives to create industrial zones and improve their appeal to companies and investors.

They offer property owners and investors defined criteria for enhancing and sustaining their facilities, considering operational requirements and the ongoing nature of existing economic activities.

Beneath Administrative Resolution No. (48) of 2026, the initial phase of execution starts in Mussafah and encompasses industrial structures and facilities adjacent to streets and public areas, whether they are existing, newly built, or in the process of construction. He stated that the requirements pertain to various facilities, such as workshops, warehouses, showrooms, logistics centers, spare-parts stores, vehicle repair and service facilities, as well as mixed-use industrial complexes.

The guidelines consider variations in construction conditions and industrial operations through three tiers of enhancement. Level One includes basic upkeep, routine cleaning, touch-up painting, and small repairs. Level Two centers on the arrangement of facade components, signage, entry points, barriers, service zones, and outdoor storage areas.

Level Three involves more comprehensive facade renovations in key areas or situations needing larger enhancements, enabling the suitable actions to be assessed based on each structure’s condition and necessities. Execution adheres to a phased compliance approach that allows property owners and investors a chance to implement the necessary enhancements.

The procedure involves increasing awareness, issuing advisory notices, formal notifications, and warnings, allowing suitable time for corrective measures before relevant authorities carry out follow-up inspections. If violations are not addressed, appropriate regulatory actions will be implemented per the relevant regulations, with grievance and appeal options accessible under the authorized procedures.

The guidelines aim to create uniform standards for the regulation and maintenance of industrial building facades, aiding in the enhancement of Abu Dhabi’s urban scenery and integrating safety protocols, operational effectiveness, and urban environmental quality in industrial zones.
