Achieving Net-Zero Emissions by 2050 is a Political Mission: PM

According to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, reaching the goal of net-zero emissions presents both challenges and opportunities for sustainable development, fostering an independent economy, and enhancing international integration.
At the conclusion of the sixth meeting of the National Steering Committee for implementing Vietnam's commitments at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26), Chinh, who serves as the head of the Steering Committee, confirmed the accuracy of Vietnam's firm pledges at COP26 to work together towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

This demonstrates Vietnam's dedication to fulfilling its role alongside the international community in the fight against climate change. He recognized and valued the proactive and serious efforts of ministries, sectors, localities, the business community, and the people in fulfilling Vietnam's commitments at COP26. The achievements made so far have set a solid foundation for future advancements towards the 2050 net-zero target.
The Prime Minister observed that various government agencies, industries, regions, and businesses have been actively participating in digital transformation, green transition, low-carbon economy development, circular economy promotion, and energy transition. The incorporation and assimilation of COP26 pledges into laws, policies, and strategies have been carried out promptly and efficiently, establishing a legal framework to advance efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting green transformation, and adapting to climate change.

PM Chinh stated that Viet Nam is now seen as a trustworthy and appealing location that has caught the interest of numerous organizations, as well as drawing in international financial resources and investors who are keen on green development and energy transition. Various well-known international companies have already visited Viet Nam to explore and look for cooperation prospects in renewable energy, projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the creation of carbon credits.
He mentioned that Vietnamese enterprises have signed and started implementing cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding with international financial institutions and credit organizations to mobilize resources for green transition and fulfill commitments made at COP26.
He further stated that there has been an increase in public and business recognition and accountability for safeguarding the environment and addressing climate change, as demonstrated by the focus on practices such as sustainable consumption, reforestation, conservation efforts, adoption of renewable energy sources, proactive disaster preparedness, and the advancement of educational and scientific endeavors.
He emphasized that climate change is becoming more intricate, as natural disasters are leading to severe and unpredictable outcomes. The current situation requires a swift transition from being aware to taking action, from making promises to achieving tangible results, with increased and more resolute measures in fighting climate change. He urged for ongoing enhancement of institutions dealing with climate change response, taking into account Viet Nam's specific conditions and in line with global standards and trends.

All stakeholders need to concentrate on creating mechanisms and strategies for raising funds, setting up procedures for adopting cutting-edge technologies for sustainable development, creating national governance models for environmentally-friendly and innovative development, and nurturing talents for eco-friendly growth.
