Anthropic Opens Seoul Office and Strengthens Korean AI Ecosystem

US AI company Anthropic has launched its Seoul office, aiming to strengthen its connections with Korea’s AI ecosystem as the developer of Claude.
“Korean companies and institutions recognize innovation and safety as goals that must go hand in hand, not a contradicting value,” according to Anthropic Korea Representative Director Choi Ki-young.
“Various organizations in the country are using Claude to create positive changes in the lives of millions of people around the world, and the opening of the Seoul office reflects our commitment to build a long-term foundation for collaboration with those leading Korea’s AI ecosystem.”

Choi, who came to Anthropic two weeks ago, is an experienced professional in Korea’s digital infrastructure sector, having held leadership positions at Google Cloud, Microsoft Korea, Adobe, and Snowflake.
Anthropic International Managing Director Chris Ciauri stated that Anthropic sees its primary duty as ensuring AI safety, positioning the company in agreement with the Korean government and its AI Framework Act, legislation aimed at tackling risks associated with AI services.
“So we see a shared philosophy there, and it’s part of the reason that we’re so excited to launch a business in Korea,” Ciauri said. “We are privileged that as we enter Korea, we’ve already got tremendous momentum in the enterprise, developer and startup sectors.”
Anthropic's office in Seoul arrives as Claude gains more traction within Korea's enterprise AI landscape. Leveraging its multi-year partnership with AI service provider WRTN Technologies and legal tech startup Law&Company, Claude has broadened its applications at major corporations in recent months.

The firm organizes multiple events for local developers, such as Claude Build Day, which welcomes over 100 representatives and developers from local startups.

Inquiries were also made regarding US export regulations on Anthropic's sophisticated cybersecurity models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, along with the subsequent prohibition on access for Korean institutions to these models. Nonetheless, company representatives declined to provide any comments regarding the matter. The dispute intensified when the Washington Post revealed that the export limits were associated with worries regarding a Korean telecom firm's supposed connections to China.
