Bahrain's Fixed Fiber Drives Telecom Data Consumption Growth

In the first quarter of this year, Bahrain's telecommunications sector achieved record levels of data usage, fueled by significant growth in fixed fiber broadband and high-bandwidth mobile subscriptions.
As per the most recent official market indicators report issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), total quarterly data traffic surged to 673 Petabytes (PB) – a significant rise from the 553 PB noted in Q1 2025.

To provide context, one petabyte contains approximately 300 million smartphone images, 500,000 regular films, 15 years of uninterrupted HD streaming, or 2,000 years of continuous music playback.
The notable increase indicates a continuous structural change throughout the nation’s digital landscape. As consumers and business clients access significantly greater amounts of online content, traditional voice communication – both local and global – keeps diminishing. Total mobile voice traffic declined to 647.3 million minutes in Q1 2026, representing a 16.9 per cent decrease from 778.6 million minutes during the same time last year.
At the quarter's conclusion, active mobile subscriptions reached 2,286,794, indicating a national mobile penetration rate of 143 percent based on an official population estimate of 1.603 million residents. A significant shift in the mobile sector is the gradual move from prepaid to postpaid billing options. Prepaid subscriptions declined from 1,561,086 in Q1 2025 to 1,460,704 in Q1 2026, currently representing 64 percent of the market.

In contrast, residential postpaid subscriptions grew to 714,317, while non-residential postpaid accounts totaled 111,773, resulting in a combined postpaid market share of 36 percent (826,090 subscriptions). The distribution of market share among Bahrain's three main mobile network operators – Batelco, stc Bahrain, and Zain Bahrain – stayed very competitive and consistent.
Batelco maintained its top position in overall mobile subscriptions with a 38.6 percent share, while stc Bahrain had 32.3 percent and Zain Bahrain possessed 29.2 percent.
In the prepaid sector, Batelco dominates with a 39pc market share, Zain has 34pc (490,403 residential lines), and stc Bahrain possesses 27pc (400,805 residential lines). On the other hand, stc Bahrain leads in the postpaid market with a 41 percent total market share, backed by 298,629 residential and 38,240 non-residential accounts. Batelco secures 38 percent of postpaid subscriptions, whereas Zain possesses 21 percent.
In Q1 2026, fixed line telephony subscriptions (excluding ISDN) reached 209,955, maintaining a consistent penetration rate of about 13.2 percent over the last five quarters. A significant portion of fixed access lines – 95 percent (200,000 lines) – consists of fixed wired connections, whereas fixed wireless represents the other five percent (10,000 lines).
Batelco maintains a leading role in fixed telephony with a 76.5 percent market share, even as alternative providers have steadily made progress, spearheaded by Zain at 13.4 percent, OLOs at 5.2 percent, and stc Bahrain at 4.9 percent.

Voice traffic metrics demonstrate a persistent decline in fixed networks. Overall outgoing fixed voice traffic decreased by 14 percent compared to the previous year, falling from 27.5 million minutes in Q1 2025 to 23.7 million minutes in Q1 2026. The monthly average outgoing domestic minutes per line fell from 41 to 36 minutes during the same timeframe, while international outgoing fixed minutes declined from 1.08 million to 834,249 minutes.
Bahrain's broadband industry continues to be the primary driver of growth in the telecommunications market. Total broadband subscriptions (including mobile and fixed broadband, excluding M2M) hit 2,600,450 in Q1 2026, resulting in a population penetration rate of 162 percent. Mobile broadband encompasses 2,411,845 subscriptions (150.4 percent penetration), and fixed broadband subscriptions increased to 188,605.
