HD Hyundai Chief Meets India’s Modi to Expand Shipbuilding Ties

HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the enhancement of bilateral collaboration in shipbuilding and associated industries, according to reports.

Chung and CEO Kim Hyung-kwan of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering participated in a top-level discussion convened by Modi at the official residence of the prime minister in New Delhi.

This gathering took place concurrently with India Energy Week 2026. Approximately 30 participants, including Modi, senior Indian government officials, heads of state-owned enterprises, and chief executives of major global companies, were assembled for the roundtable discussion to investigate potential collaborations in energy and maritime sectors.

Chung conveyed gratitude towards the Indian government for their unwavering dedication to cultivating the shipbuilding industry during the meeting.

He also requested a sustained focus and assistance for the ongoing collaborative endeavors of HD Hyundai in the nation.

As a component of India's Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 strategy, HD Hyundai entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cochin Shipyard, the country's leading state-owned shipbuilding company, in July of the previous year.

The agreement outlines collaboration between the two entities in various areas, such as improving productivity, developing workforce capabilities, assisting with ship design, and supporting procurement efforts.

 

The organization has broadened its collaboration with Cochin Shipyard to encompass naval vessels.

Additionally, HD Hyundai has increased its efforts to enter the Indian market by executing an exclusive memorandum of understanding with the government of Tamil Nadu to collaboratively establish a shipyard and enhance collaboration in port crane ventures with state-owned heavy equipment manufacturer BEML.

India has demonstrated a keen interest in enhancing its relationship with HD Hyundai. As evidenced by visits in November of the prior year and January of the current year, India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, along with Tamil Nadu's Minister for Industries, T. R. B. Rajaa, traveled to Korea to explore opportunities for collaboration with HD Hyundai.

During their visits, they inspected HD Hyundai's Global R&D Center and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan shipyard to engage in discussions on furthering cooperation.
