HD Hyundai Promotes Founder's Grandson to Chairman

HD Hyundai's Executive Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun received a promotion to chairman, bringing to a close thirty years during which the family-controlled shipbuilding conglomerate was managed by executives from outside the founding family.
The promotion of the 43-year-old comes after he was elevated to executive vice chairman from vice chairman the previous year. Current Chairman Kwon Oh-gap will retire from his management role following the shareholders' meeting planned for March of next year, with the 74-year-old receiving the title of honorary chairman.

Through an executive reorganization that occurred earlier than anticipated at year's end, HD Hyundai revealed Chung's advancement. Chung is among the grandsons of the deceased Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung and serves as the oldest son of Chung Mong-joon, who holds the position of Honorary Chairman at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies and represents the group's primary shareholder. Chung's father, who pursued a political career as a legislator in the late 1980s, has remained uninvolved in corporate management since that time.
Chung obtained his undergraduate degree in economics from Yonsei University and started his professional journey as a reporter at The Dong-A Ilbo in 2007. Following a short stint with the family enterprise in 2009, he pursued an MBA at Stanford University and subsequently worked with Boston Consulting Group between 2011 and 2013.
