Indonesia Pushes Jakarta MRT Expansion to Boost Transit Use

The Vice President of Indonesia emphasized that secure, state-of-the-art, and cohesive transportation systems are crucial for encouraging commuters to transition to public transit.
This statement comes as Jakarta speeds up the development of its MRT and other mass transit infrastructure.

During an inspection of the MRT extension projects in Jakarta, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka delivered his remarks.
He stated that President Prabowo Subianto has made the advancement of dependable and state-of-the-art public transportation infrastructure a top priority. Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo, and MRT Jakarta President Director Tuhiyat took part in the visit.
Gibran also commended Jakarta's initiative of exempting public transportation fares for 15 specific groups, which include senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. He stated that enhancements in service quality should be integrated with the subsidy policy. Beyond the scope of the MRT, Gibran expressed approval for the continued expansion of Jakarta's LRT and the TransJakarta bus services into neighboring regions.
Governor Pramono stated that the construction advancement of MRT Phase 2A, which connects Bundaran HI with Kota Tua, has achieved a completion rate of 59.7 percent. He indicated that the trial operations are scheduled to commence in 2027.

Furthermore, he noted that the 22.2-kilometer north-south corridor is anticipated to be entirely finished by 2029. Pramono additionally stated that the initial section of the east-west MRT corridor is anticipated to commence operations by 2030.
The provincial government of Jakarta broadened its international collaborations with the cities of Shenzhen, Seoul, Tokyo, and Kyoto in the course of a series of diplomatic engagements conducted from April 22 to April 28.
These interactions emphasized cooperative efforts in the domains of transportation, healthcare, sustainable innovation, and investment.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is spearheading an initiative aimed at enhancing city-to-city diplomacy with prominent urban centers across Asia. This effort is intended to elevate Indonesia's capital, positioning it as a globally recognized, sustainable, and livable metropolis. While in Seoul, Jakarta is poised to formalize a partnership agreement with Jeju and plans to undertake benchmarking visits to Boramae Medical Center and Healing Breeze Clinic.

These initiatives aim to facilitate enhancements in Jakarta's healthcare infrastructure, particularly at Sumber Waras Hospital. In Japan, Pramono is scheduled to engage with the Governor of Tokyo to enhance collaboration in areas such as green innovation, youth diplomacy, and urban resilience. Additionally, Pramono will deliver an address at the G-NETS Leaders Summit 2026, focusing on sustainability, climate resilience, and the future trajectory of global cities.
