Indonesia Sees Russia Partnership Key to Economic Transformation

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the partnership between Indonesia and Russia holds significant potential to support Indonesia's economic transformation.
"Moving forward, Indonesia-Russia cooperation has significant potential to support Indonesia's economic transformation, particularly through industrial development, downstreaming, infrastructure development, energy security, digital transformation, technological development, and sustainable development," he expounds.

Airlangga delivered the comments during his address at the celebration of Russian National Day in Jakarta night.
He stated that both countries are dedicated to pursuing new areas of collaboration to strengthen their economic and industrial partnership.
Additionally, he emphasized that the signing of the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement last December marks a significant achievement. The significant agreement is anticipated to enhance market access, streamline trade, and increase business interaction between Indonesia and member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, such as Russia.
The minister also conveyed gratitude for the chance afforded to the Indonesian government to engage as a partner nation at Russia’s leading industrial trade show, INNOPROM, set to occur in Yekaterinburg from July 6 to 9.
Airlangga conveyed optimism that the involvement would enhance cooperation between stakeholders from the two countries in advancing trade, science, value-added manufacturing, cutting-edge industrial technology, the automotive industry, energy, and digital innovation.
Russia is a key strategic ally for Indonesia, as both countries have upheld diplomatic ties for 76 years. Economic relations between Indonesia and Russia have maintained a positive trajectory, with bilateral trade between the two nations hitting US$5 billion in 2025. The volume of Russian tourists visiting Indonesia is also increasing, supported by the initiation of direct flights from Moscow to Denpasar.

Minister Bahlil Lahadalia of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has stated that the contract for importing crude oil from Russia is finalized and prepared for the next steps. The ESDM Ministry previously indicated that Indonesia would keep importing crude oil from Russia, despite the reopening of the shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz due to reduced tensions in the Middle East.
It forms part of the pledge to import 150 million barrels of oil from Russia, to be implemented gradually by the end of 2026, following President Prabowo Subianto’s trip to Russia last April.

On the other hand, Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergey Tolchenov stated that the Indonesian Government has not made any specific inquiries about oil purchases and collaboration on nuclear power plant (PLTN) development with Russia.
