The prime minister, who started his term on October 21, announced that the government intends to conduct a test of extracting clays that are thought to hold rare earths from the deep sea, approximately 6,000 meters deep.

Takaichi made comments following previous statements by Shigeru Ishiba in April about Japan's plans to start test-drilling for rare earths in the waters this fiscal year. The government aims to begin full-scale drilling in fiscal 2028.

Rare earths are necessary for producing various advanced technological products like magnets used in electric cars. Rare earth elements have been discovered in clays located in waters close to the island.
