KAIST Professor Kim Joung-ho Honored With Paiknam Prize

Professor Kim Jeong-ho from KAIST's School of Electrical Engineering has been chosen as the recipient of the "7th Hanyang Baeknam Award 2025," an honor presented by the Hanyang University Baeknam Memorial Association.

Hanyang University announced on the 12th that Professor Kim Jeong-ho and Park Su-gil, an honorary professor at Hanyang University who received the music award, were selected as the recipients of the 7th Hanyang Baeknam Award 2025.

Professor Kim is recognized as the pivotal individual who developed the fundamental concept and structure of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which represents the essential technology behind AI semiconductors that Korea was the first nation to successfully bring to market.

Through his design work, he established this technology and has propelled the advancement of Korea's semiconductor sector, including major companies like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. He is considered a globally recognized expert in AI semiconductor technology.

Kim introduced the "next-generation HBM roadmap (HBM4–HBM8)," guiding the technological outlook until 2038, while also playing a role in advancing international standardization efforts and maintaining technological supremacy. In February, he was honored with the 8th Kang Daewon Award in the circuits and systems category for his significant contributions to HBM technology advancement.

Throughout more than three decades, he has authored 712 publications in international journals and conference proceedings focusing on HBM, received 34 awards for outstanding papers, and supervised 115 students to complete their master's and doctoral degrees, making significant contributions to developing Korea's advanced semiconductor workforce. 

His collaborations with major global technology corporations including Google, Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla have positioned him as a leader in facilitating international technological cooperation.

 

The Hanyang Baeknam Award was created to preserve and advance the legacy of Dr. Baeknam Kim Yeon-jun (1914–2008), who founded Hanyang University, and provides recipients with prize money totaling 1.5 billion won.

The award presentation ceremony will take place at Hanyang University on the 16th of the following month.
