The approach also signifies a wider transition from mainly being a materials provider to offering technology-driven solutions customized to customers’ changing requirements and stricter environmental standards.

Kumho Petrochemical Group is shifting away from a business model reliant on market cycles by utilizing technology to enhance profitability and actively pursuing new growth opportunities for the future, the company states.

A primary focus of the group is to broaden its range of specialty products. Kumho Petrochemical has enhanced its production capacity for solution styrene butadiene rubber, a synthetic rubber utilized in high-performance tires for electric vehicles. The material enhances durability, rolling resistance, and wear characteristics, becoming more crucial as electric vehicle usage rises.

The organization is also expanding its sustainability efforts. It has constructed facilities for carbon capture, utilization, and storage that can capture approximately 76,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Independently, it has created a method to transform recycled acrylonitrile butadiene styrene obtained from thrown-away home appliances into automotive-grade interior materials that satisfy performance standards and reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional manufacturing.

In addition to its conventional petrochemical offerings, the company is involved in advancing next-generation anode-free lithium-metal batteries alongside partners such as POSCO Future M and BEI.

Additional affiliates are following comparable technology-focused approaches. Kumho P&B Chemicals is creating water-based epoxy resins to minimize volatile organic compound emissions while enhancing the use of bio-based feedstocks to decrease carbon intensity.

Kumho Mitsui Chemicals is working on bio-based polyurethane systems and materials for electric vehicles, simultaneously increasing production capacity of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate via debottlenecking investments.

The firm is working on a project to expand its annual capacity by an additional 100,000 tons to enhance competitiveness and adapt to evolving market needs.

Kumho Polychem is concentrating on ethylene propylene diene monomer, a more valuable synthetic rubber, integrating low-temperature polymerization technology with energy-efficient enhancements to lower emissions and enhance production efficiency.
