In a significant leadership move, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, named Fidji Simo as the chief executive officer of applications.
A prominent name from the tech industry has joined OpenAI to assist steer its next phase. Former Facebook app CEO and current Instacart CEO Fidji Simo will join OpenAI as CEO of Applications, directly answering to Sam Altman.
It is anticipated that Simo will bolster OpenAI's application-focused efforts, such as ChatGPT and other AI applications aimed at consumers.
As the AI platform gets closer to "superintelligence," Altman said he will be able to concentrate on research, computation, and safety in the new setup.
Altman shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his excitement about the move. “So excited that @fidjissimo is joining OpenAI in a new role: CEO of Applications, reporting to me,” he wrote. “Fidji is exceptional; we have worked together on OpenAI for the past year and I have observed her deep commitment to our mission.”
Altman noted that this new leadership structure will enable him to concentrate more on the company's primary priorities—research, compute, and safety—especially as the team gets closer to creating superintelligence, even if he will still serve as CEO of OpenAI overall.
Simo says, "Joining OpenAI at this critical moment is an incredible privilege and responsibility".

Currently, Simo is the CEO of Instacart, a supermarket delivery business. Since March 2024, she has been on the OpenAI board. Since December 2021, she has also been on the Shopify board.
Throughout her more than ten years as a social media major, she has worked with Facebook, leading the app operations, gaming and monetization, and product management departments.
