imgAs pharmaceutical companies stocked up ahead of possible US tariffs on their products, which have traditionally been immune from such penalties, pharmaceutical imports to the states increased dramatically in March.

According to data from a US Commerce Department report, the month's total imports of pharmaceutical products topped $50 billion, or 20 percent of all pharmaceutical imports in 2024.

Ireland, the leading medication exporter to the US, had a sharp increase in imports. For the first time in March, the nation's trade surplus with the US was greater than China's.

Drugs accounted for the majority of the $15.5 billion increase in Ireland's total imports from February.

As part of a trade strategy he claims will boost domestic pharmaceutical production, President Donald Trump has been threatening to impose tariffs on pharmaceuticals.

The Trump administration began looking into pharmaceutical imports last month in anticipation of potentially enacting tariffs on the grounds that a heavy dependence on foreign manufacturing of medications poses a national security risk.

Trump promised to unveil the tariffs within the next two weeks on Monday. In order to lessen the regulatory burden on medication manufacturers in the states, he also issued an executive order.

Drug manufacturers claim that they have taken the unprecedented step of shipping more medications to the United States via air in recent months. During recent investor calls, two of the largest US pharmaceutical companies stated that they had increased their efforts to bring in inventories in anticipation of tariffs.
