PM's Algeria Visit Expected to Elevate Bilateral Ties

The diplomatic journey of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Algeria, scheduled for November 18-20, is anticipated to forge a fresh and significant phase in the historical bilateral relationship between Vietnam and Algeria, as stated by Vietnam's ambassador to Algeria, Tran Quoc Khanh.
The diplomatic representative emphasized that the two nations have a uniquely close bond, which originated from their shared historical experience of fighting for peace, self-governance, and national autonomy.

Although diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Algeria were formally established 63 years ago in October 1962, the sense of mutual support and connection between their populations had been deeply rooted long before that time.
He observed that during the early 1950s, certain Algerian military personnel serving in the French Foreign Legion opted to align themselves with the Viet Minh. Many of these soldiers subsequently became key participants in Algeria's independence movement.
In 1958, Viet Nam was among the pioneering Asian countries to officially acknowledge the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic when international support was minimal. As a reciprocal gesture, Algeria emerged as one of the most steadfast supporters of Viet Nam throughout its resistance struggle and subsequent national reconstruction efforts.

Khanh noted that the relationship has been established on an exceptionally strong basis, allowing for continuous growth and enhanced mutual understanding. The two nations have consistently maintained robust political confidence and have routinely provided mutual support during regional and international discussions. Their economic connections have also demonstrated significant advancement. During the initial ten months of 2025, their trade volume exceeded 450 million USD, positioning Algeria as one of Vietnam's most important trading partners within the African continent.
A significant milestone in economic collaboration is the shared petroleum and natural gas enterprise between Vietnam's National Industry and Energy Corporation (Petrovietnam) and Algeria, which Khanh characterized as one of the organization's most notable international investment initiatives and a prime example of successful bilateral economic partnership.

The diplomat highlighted the increasing importance of personal interactions and cultural exchanges, pointing out that Vovinam has gained significant traction in Algeria, with approximately 30,000 individuals currently studying this Vietnamese martial art form. Additionally, there is a growing trend among Algerian youth to explore opportunities in Vietnam, which is contributing to enhanced bilateral understanding and interpersonal connections between the citizens of both nations.
