Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, announced his intention to visit India next month (September 2025) as the tech company prepares to establish its first office in Delhi, as detailed in a post on social media platform X.

He also mentioned that the company aims to open its inaugural office in India later in 2025 due to the increasing adoption of ChatGPT in the South Asian country.

In his post, Sam Altman expressed, “We are excited to open our first office in India later this year! I’m looking forward to my visit next month.”

Altman highlighted that ChatGPT has experienced a fourfold increase in its user base in India over the past year, one of the driving factors for the company’s enthusiasm about expanding its presence in India.

He stated, "The adoption of AI in India has been remarkable to observe — ChatGPT users increased by 4x in the past year -- and we are thrilled to invest significantly more in India!”

According to reports, the team at OpenAI's upcoming India office will focus on enhancing connections with local partners, government entities, businesses, developers, and educational institutions.

 

The company revealed that India is the second-largest market for ChatGPT, having noted a fourfold rise in the number of users of the AI chatbot within the last year.

In conjunction with its office opening plans, OpenAI has also introduced an India-specific ChatGPT Go plan priced at Rs.399, aiming to improve affordability and raise the usage limits for its chatbot.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways & Information Broadcasting, stated, "OpenAI's decision to establish a presence in India signifies the country's advancing position in digital innovation and the adoption of AI. With substantial investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is well-equipped to spearhead the next phase of AI-driven transformation."
