Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense declared Major General Abdullah al-Shehri as the new commander of the Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance.

The appointment is a step towards finalizing the alliance’s foundational arrangements and comes after a previous announcement made on July 30, the ministry states.

The ministry characterized the appointment as a crucial move in developing the alliance's institutional framework and enhancing its operational preparedness.

The statement indicates that al-Shehri will head the joint maritime defense command of the alliance and manage planning and coordination with member countries and other maritime coalitions. He will additionally oversee the execution of collaborative activities and missions in line with the alliance’s charter, governing documents, and set procedures.

The alliance is tasked with enhancing maritime security, ensuring freedom of navigation, securing important maritime routes and strategic straits, and protecting international trade and global supply chains within its assigned region, according to the ministry.

Saudi Arabia stated that the appointment would aid in forming the alliance’s command structures and joint staff, enhancing its capacity to accept new members and carry out various maritime operations.

The coalition is anticipated to enhance collaboration in domains such as maritime security, intelligence sharing, capability development, training, and collaborative drills.

The ministry announced that more countries have finalized the signing of the alliance’s joint declaration since its establishment was revealed. Additional states are in the process of finalizing internal steps required to sign the declaration and the alliance’s charter prior to officially becoming founding members.

The alliance is receptive to nations whose goals and values match its own, the statement noted, indicating that it is still accepting membership requests. The ministry will release an additional statement detailing the countries that have finalized the signing process.

The upcoming phase of the alliance's creation will involve a gathering of military strategists on August 12 and 13. The gathering will emphasize fulfilling institutional obligations and facilitating more nations to endorse the joint declaration and charter prior to their official accession.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia has made a noteworthy move in creating a new regional maritime security framework by hosting the initial meeting of the suggested Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance, a project designed to safeguard international shipping lanes in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.

The gathering, organized by the Saudi Ministry of Defense, assembled chiefs of staff and military officials from regional and global partners focused on maritime security, navigation freedom, and safeguarding international trade routes.

In attendance were Sudanese Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Yasser al-Atta, as well as chiefs of staff and military representatives from participating nations, which included high-level officials from the armed forces of the US and the UK, along with regional countries with strategic stakes in Red Sea security.

The meeting signified an important advance in shifting dialogues on maritime security from political alignment to an institutional framework grounded in collaboration among involved states. The initiative arises amidst rising global anxiety regarding dangers to maritime security, such as assaults on commercial ships, energy transportation, and maritime facilities, which have heightened risks for worldwide supply chains and international trade.
