Taiwan's export control list now includes Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), a company based in China.

The trade administration of the economy ministry made the announcement, which requires Taiwanese businesses to get government approval before exporting goods to these organizations.

601 entities from a variety of nations, including China, Iran, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Russia, are included in the new list.

After reviewing the entity list, the ministry said, it took this move, highlighting the importance of "prevention of arms proliferation and other national security considerations."

Taiwan, a major participant in the global semiconductor market and the location of contract chipmaker TSMC, imposes stringent export regulations on chips, particularly for companies who manufacture in the country or serve Chinese enterprises.

Nvidia's main supplier, TSMC, has come under fire for its supply chain.

After a TSMC semiconductor was discovered in Huawei's 910B AI processor in October 2024, TSMC halted deliveries to Sophgo, a Chinese chip designer that made a comparable chip.

The US Commerce Department ordered TSMC to stop further shipments to Chinese clients in November of that year.

US trade restrictions already restrict Huawei's access to US technology and goods, including foreign-made goods that use US technology, like TSMC processors.

In the midst of continuous US export restrictions, SMIC has been increasing its production capacity to strengthen China's local semiconductor capabilities.

The government of Taiwan has also pledged to support Chinese companies' attempts to hire personnel and technology from the island, notably SMIC.

Huawei stated in April 2025 that it will start shipping its 910C AI processor in bulk to domestic customers as early as July.
