Trump Administration Urges Nations to Submit Best Trade Offers by Wednesday

imgThe Trump administration is urging nations to submit their best trade offers by Wednesday (June 4), as officials work to expedite negotiations with various partners before a self-imposed deadline in just five weeks.

A draft from the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) office reveals how President Donald Trump intends to conclude complex discussions with numerous countries that began on April 9 when he suspended his “Liberation Day” tariffs for 90 days until July 8, following a tumultuous reaction from stock, bond, and currency markets to the broad scope of the tariffs.

The document indicates a sense of urgency within the administration to finalize agreements within its tight timeline. Although officials, including White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, have frequently indicated that several deals are close to being finalized, only one agreement has been established with a major U.S. trading partner: Britain. Even that limited agreement resembles more of a framework for ongoing discussions than a finalized contract.

In the draft, the U.S. requests countries to provide their best proposals regarding several crucial areas, including tariff and quota offers for U.S. industrial and agricultural goods, along with plans to address any non-tariff barriers.

Additional requested items encompass commitments related to digital trade and economic security, as well as specific commitments from each country, according to the correspondence.

The U.S. plans to review the responses in a matter of days and suggest “a possible landing zone” that might include a reciprocal tariff rate, as stated in the document.

It remains uncertain which countries will receive the letter, although it was aimed at those actively engaged in negotiations involving meetings and document exchanges. Washington has been involved in such discussions with the European Union, Japan, Vietnam, and India, among others.

A USTR official mentioned that trade negotiations are proceeding. “Constructive talks with numerous key trading partners are advancing swiftly. It is in the interest of all parties to assess progress and determine the next steps.”
