Vietnamese, Cambodian PMs Inaugurate Tan Nam - Meun Chey

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manit together led the opening ceremony of the Tan Nam (located in Tay Ninh province, Vietnam) - Meun Chey (located in Prey Veng province, Cambodia) international border gate pair.

The border crossing point is situated approximately 150 km away from Ho Chi Minh City and around 120 km from Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh. The opening of this border crossing point holds great importance in enhancing the close proximity, traditional friendship, broad cooperation, and lasting sustainability between Viet Nam and Cambodia.

It is anticipated that this initiative will play a key role in fostering the creation of a boundary focused on peace, friendship, cooperation, and development. It aims to improve connectivity in infrastructure and promote interactions between people.

Furthermore, it aims to assist in reaching the goal of increasing bilateral trade to 20 billion USD, which is currently at 10 billion USD per year. Addressing the inauguration ceremony, both leaders highlighted the significance of the event, which demonstrates the values of trust, unity, and strong collaboration, creating opportunities for increased trade and fostering closer ties between the two countries. They commended the ministries, local governments, and other organizations for their teamwork in the construction and enhancement of the border gate.

PM Chinh emphasized the significance of the international border gates along the Viet Nam–Cambodia border in strengthening the strong, friendly relationship between the two countries. These border gates have been instrumental in connecting the economies of both nations for many years.

They have also played a crucial role in facilitating the circulation of goods, allowing businesses to enhance trade and cooperation, and making travel easier for people from both countries.

He underscored that the border between Viet Nam and Cambodia serves as more than just a physical boundary, but also as a connection for communication, camaraderie, and collaboration, demonstrating the strong relationship and enduring ties between the two nations and their citizens. 

 

The establishment of the new border checkpoint set has opened up fresh possibilities, particularly in aiding rapid and lasting progress, bringing joy and success to border towns and aiding in the mutual advancement of both nations. To guarantee the efficient functioning of the border gate pair, the Prime Minister of Vietnam has urged the relevant ministries, sectors, agencies, and localities in both countries to work closely together and concentrate on five key areas: enhancing border control, security, and joint patrols, etc.

PM Chinh stated his optimism that the opening of the Tan Nam – Meun Chey border gate pair will generate significant progress for both nations in finalizing the remaining 16 percent of the border demarcation and marker planting. Additionally, he proposed exploring the establishment of more international border gates along the shared border to increase bilateral trade to 20 billion USD, as previously agreed upon by the respective leaders of the two countries.

He stated that the goal is for the border gate pair to serve as a model internationally, excelling in digital transformation and fostering prosperity, happiness, and well-being for those living in the border regions. This will strengthen the relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia and act as a symbol of security, friendship, growth, and trust for both nations. It aims to promote a peaceful, stable, cooperative, and sustainable environment in the region.
