He subsequently returned to sales and business development, joining one of the country’s leading telecommunications firms. At the age of 26, Banguilan was selected for executive training at the Asian Institute of Management, one of the Philippines' premier business schools.

After two years with the company, he founded his own enterprise, Media Convergence Inc. Below is an excerpt from CEO Insights Asia's' exclusive interview with Banguilan.

What key lessons did you gain from Mapua University that were useful in your leadership journey?

I learned two valuable lessons from Mapua University. First, remain strong and focused on achieving your goals regardless of your current situation. Challenges will arise, but persistence, endurance and determination are key to success.

Second, actively seek knowledge beyond what is taught in class. It’s important to utilize multiple sources and learn independently to deepen your understanding and improve your skills.

Challenges will arise, but persistence, endurance and determination are key to success.

Could you describe faculty availability to students during your time at the university?

At Mapua University, access to faculty was limited, which encouraged us to become independent learners. I was fortunate to have intelligent and knowledgeable friends who often shared valuable insights. In return, I contributed by bringing balance and companionship to our group. These connections greatly supported my learning throughout college.

How did you make use of the alumni network after your graduation?

The alumni network has been very beneficial. When I started my company, a few of my former instructors became my clients, giving me opportunities that helped establish and grow my business. Over time, I also realized that some of my current clients are fellow Mapua alumni, which I only discovered during alumni gatherings.

These connections have proven valuable not only for business opportunities but also for collaboration and shared growth. I believe actively engaging with the alumni network is critical, as it fosters mutual support and contributes to advancing our respective industries.

What is your most cherished memory from your time at the university?

One of the most memorable parts of my experience at Mapua University was being a member of the Mapua Mountaineers. Through mountaineering, I learned valuable life lessons, most notably, the importance of perseverance and endurance. Climbing challenging mountains, despite harsh weather and physical difficulty, taught me that with determination, one can eventually reach the summit.

That sense of accomplishment and the perspective gained from the top remain deeply meaningful. This experience continues to inspire me during difficult times, reminding me to persist and stay focused on my goals.

How would you describe your leadership style and the work environment you have cultivated to foster employee growth?

My leadership style is centered on creativity, innovation, and systematization. I believe it’s essential to inspire both employees and peers to believe in their potential and strive for excellence. I aim to share key principles of success, not only for professional growth but also for personal development. Through this approach, I aim to foster a supportive and growth-oriented work environment.

What is the roadmap you have envisioned for yourself over the next five years?

The world is quickly changing, and it is essential for us to adapt and innovate continuously. We must be sensitive to our clients’ needs and help them address their challenges using better technologies, focusing on efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Currently, we are actively exploring how AI can enhance both our customer’s experience and our company’s operations. For us, the key is to consistently adapt to technological advancements and innovate in ways that create meaningful impact for our clients.

What piece of advice would you like to offer to aspiring leaders?

Always maintain a clear focus on your goals, and you will ultimately achieve them.
