As one of the leading hubs for technology and innovation in Asia, Singapore has made significant strides in developing robust cybersecurity frameworks. The country’s proactive approach includes initiatives like the Singapore Cybersecurity Strategy and the establishment of various public and private sector collaborations aimed at enhancing cybersecurity readiness. In recent years, Singapore has also emerged as a regional leader in cybersecurity, offering specialized services, training, and research capabilities in the field. Amongst the prominent figures contributing to Singapore’s cybersecurity landscape is Daniel Goh, a seasoned expert with a wealth of experience in both Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT).

Daniel’s career has been marked by significant contributions to national cybersecurity programs, particularly in the domains of critical information infrastructure protection and aviation security. His journey in cybersecurity began with the Singapore Infocomm Technology Security Authority (SITSA), where he was part of the pioneering team behind the Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP) programme. His work involved conducting the first-ever Operational Technology Security Audits across various sectors, where he focused on identifying vulnerabilities and strengthening cybersecurity protocols.

Notably, he played an instrumental role in shaping the aviation sector’s cybersecurity strategy, integrating cyber considerations into crisis management plans, and co-authoring the influential article 'Aviation Cyber Security: A New Security Landscape' in the Journal of Aviation Management in 2014. Daniel later transitioned to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), where he continued to drive initiatives for securing the nation’s aviation infrastructure. His expertise later expanded to securing military systems during his tenure at ST Electronics, where he worked on integrating and fortifying large-scale military projects.

Currently, Daniel serves as the Managing Director of Asteria, a cybersecurity firm focused on delivering cutting-edge security solutions. Daniel also holds the position of Director at ATET Pte Ltd, contributing his expertise towards enhancing the company’s cybersecurity offerings. In addition, Daniel actively participates in industry forums, such as the CIO World Asia Cybersecurity Forum in Singapore, where he shares his knowledge and insights with fellow cybersecurity professionals.

Beyond his professional roles, Daniel is passionate about education and serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), imparting his cybersecurity knowledge to help companies better protect themselves. His career reflects a commitment to advancing cybersecurity in critical sectors, such as aviation, military systems, and public service, ensuring that these vital areas remain resilient against evolving cyber threats.

CEO Insights Asia engaged in a one on one interaction with Daniel Goh. Let’s hear more from him in this one-on-one interaction.

I lead by example, ensuring that solutions are both actionable and adaptable, staying aligned with the evolving demands of the industry

What is your approach towards effective leadership? Please share your principles or strategies that guide you in leading your team effectively.

My leadership approach is shaped by my extensive experience in cybersecurity, particularly in securing critical information infrastructure. Early in my career, I worked in the Singapore Infocomm Technology Security Authority (SITSA) on the Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP) program, which instilled in me the importance of proactively addressing risks to vital sectors. I focus on ensuring the security of systems where the consequences of a cyberattack can be catastrophic.

I believe in fostering collaboration across disciplines, particularly between IT and Operational Technology (OT). Throughout my career, I’ve worked to bridge these domains, understanding that complex cybersecurity challenges require diverse perspectives and teamwork. I strive to create an environment where cross-disciplinary cooperation is key to solving problems effectively. Continuous learning and knowledge sharing are central to my leadership. As an Adjunct Lecturer at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), I enjoy mentoring and helping others stay ahead in the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape. I'm enthusiastic about attending events like the CIO World Asia Cybersecurity Forum to connect with industry experts and exchange cutting-edge ideas. Strategic vision and risk management are at the heart of my leadership. In my roles with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and ST Electronics, I’ve had to guide teams through high-stakes decisions, balancing immediate risk management with long-term objectives. I approach every challenge with a focus on long-term security.

Finally, my leadership emphasizes industry-specific solutions. Whether at ATET or Asteria, I prioritize developing practical, scalable cybersecurity measures that are tailored to an organization’s unique needs. I lead by example, ensuring that solutions are both actionable and adaptable, staying aligned with the evolving demands of the industry.

What drives your passion towards bridging IT and OT security?

My dedication to bridging IT and OT security, along with my work in shaping cybersecurity strategies across industries, is driven by a strong desire to make a meaningful impact on the safety, security, and future-readiness of technology in both the private and public sectors. I am also deeply committed to guiding organizations and mentoring the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, as I believe in the importance of continuously improving and innovating within the field.

How do you ensure your team stay informed about the latest cybersecurity trends and emerging threats?

To keep my team up to date, I encourage regular communication through group chats, where we share the latest cybersecurity news and important updates. This helps everyone stay informed in real time. Additionally, I support the team’s growth by offering annual certification opportunities, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to stay ahead of new challenges. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and information sharing, I make sure my team remains well-prepared to tackle evolving cybersecurity issues.

What is the ultimate goal or destination you're working towards in the future?

Looking ahead, my future is focused on several impactful paths in the cybersecurity landscape. One key direction is increasing my leadership in global cybersecurity initiatives, where I could collaborate with international organizations, governments, and tech giants to shape global standards and regulations. I also see myself continuing to expand my role as a thought leader in cybersecurity. I plan to broaden my influence in the cybersecurity field by expanding my research, delivering insightful speaking engagements, and actively contributing to policy-making.

With the rise of AI, 5G, IoT, and Quantum Technologies, I am also interested in focusing on securing these next-gen technologies, ensuring their safe integration into everyday life. My early experience with critical infrastructure protection may also lead me into advisory roles within government or national-level cybersecurity programs.

My passion for mentoring and cybersecurity education will also remain a priority. I aim to help develop specialized programs that address the evolving cyber threat landscape and continue guiding the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. In essence, my future will blend leadership, global influence, cybersecurity innovation, and a strong focus on education and mentorship to shape the industry’s future.

Based on your experience, what would you advice the future leaders in the cybersecurity industry?

My advice to upcoming leaders is that cybersecurity is a process, not a product. It's crucial to remember that as the industry becomes more specialized, we must also maintain an understanding of the broader landscape of cybersecurity and its true purpose. The goal is to ensure that security measures remain relevant, adaptable, and effective in a constantly evolving environment. It's easy to get caught up in the latest tools and technologies, but we must always keep in mind that cybersecurity is about creating a resilient, secure foundation for all aspects of technology. Embrace both the depth and breadth of the field and focus on continuous learning to stay ahead of emerging threats. This mindset will help ensure that the industry’s efforts remain meaningful and impactful in the long run.
