Vice President

In finance, true leadership goes beyond the competence of managing numbers to the vital skills of understanding people, nurturing trust, and shaping institutions that can weather change. As technologies continue to redefine finance with growing customer aspirations and heightened competition, the leadership in balancing innovation with interpersonal connection is as important as ever. An advocate of this unique quality is Dr. Gaiyathri Subramaniam, the Vice President of the RHB Banking Group, one of the top banks in Malaysia and with a significant presence in ASEAN. Dr. Gaiyathri's stellar academic background, transformational leadership skills, technical abilities, and appetite for constant learning have translated into people-driven growth for RHB.

With over two decades of experience in banking, Dr. Gaiyathri left behind a trail of success in major institutions such as HSBC, Hong Leong Bank and AM Bank before assuming her present leadership position at the RHB Banking Group. Her career path from a young banker to the top has been heavily people management-centered and organizational change-driven. It also led her to pursue a doctorate at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Her success can be seen as a manifestation of the idea that, despite an ever-increasingly digitalized and AI-driven world, the human touch is still at the core of the banking sector. Today, she contributes significantly to RHB's vision of providing simple, fast, and seamless customer experiences and developing a leadership culture that embraces empathy, flexibility and resilience. We are delighted to engage in an exclusive conversation with Dr. Gaiyathri, who walks us through her academic journey at UKM, leadership approach, and more.

What has been the most transformative learning experience from the University?

At UKM, I gained two key lessons critical thinking and adaptability. Critical thinking helped me analyze challenges from multiple perspectives, especially during my thesis work, while adaptability came from balancing academics with my professional career. Together, these skills have been invaluable in navigating the fast-changing financial industry and shaping my growth as a leader.

How did UKM help sharpen your entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen?

At UKM, the academic rigor encouraged me to constantly question the ‘why’ and ‘how’ behind every theory and strategy, and that mindset has translated effectively into my career in banking, where problem-solving and innovation are essential. The exposure to collaborative projects and real-world scenarios further helped sharpen my strategic thinking and decision- making skills, which continue to guide me in the industry today.

How did the University help you chisel the leader in you and explore new horizons?

UKM provided me with valuable opportunities for research collaborations and conferences with students from around the world, which greatly broadened my horizons. It enabled me to expand beyond the local level and contribute on an international scale. These experiences helped me build a strong network of colleagues and professionals beyond Malaysia, which has proven highly beneficial in fostering cross-border perspectives and partnerships in my current role. Also, the University offered a platform to publish research on international forums, providing global exposure for our work.

What is the one moment in your journey that gives you the greatest pride and joy?

The most memorable moment in my journey was the day I successfully defended my doctoral thesis. It was more than an academic milestone; it symbolized perseverance, resilience, and the ability to balance a demanding career alongside rigorous academic work. After nearly five to six hours of intense questioning from the panel, I managed to complete the defense in a single attempt, despite pursuing my doctorate part-time. Compared to many full-time students who required multiple attempts, this achievement remains a constant reminder to me that with determination and focus.

What are your core values and guiding principles as a leader? Also, what advice would you give to emerging banking leaders?

I adopt a transformational leadership style built on four pillars, namely idealized influence, inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation. I also emphasize empathy, supporting people with thoughtful solutions beyond instructions.

As the industry evolves rapidly, it is crucial to build both technical expertise & emotional intelligence

Continuous learning is essential, whether through formal education or informal avenues. As the industry evolves rapidly, it is crucial to build both technical expertise and emotional intelligence. Equally important is to lead with purpose and a clear vision. When the ‘why’ is strong, it not only helps navigate challenges but also inspires others to follow with confidence.

What is the next chapter you look forward to in your journey?

My future direction is focused on building sustainable financial solutions and contributing to a banking ecosystem that embraces digital transformation while ensuring financial inclusion. While AI will play a significant role in the future of finance, I believe the human element will remain essential. I aspire to continue growing in my career, advancing to senior leadership roles, while also mentoring and guiding the next generation of leaders in the industry.
