Director - Scientific Development

In the sterile calm of hospital wards, where human resilience meets biological limitation, a young researcher once saw more than illness. He perceived the potential of the human body, the potential of a cell to repair what medicine could not, and the potential of science to power the engine of healing. That belief has since evolved into a lifelong pursuit of regenerative innovations, where cellular therapy moves from concept to clinical reality. We are referring to Chee Yin Wong, the Director of Scientific Development at ALPS Group Inc., a biotechnology company that is transforming the future of precision and preventive healthcare through the power of cellular science.

Chee Yin, a graduate in biotechnology with a Master's degree in Medical Sciences from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), has an impressive history in cell research, particularly in mesenchymal stem cells and their biologic regenerative therapy for kidney diseases. From co-founding a stem cell company to heading scientific programs at ALPS Group and its subsidiary, Celestialab, he has continued to be a champion of innovation that combines compassion with scientific precision, ensuring that each discovery brings humanity a step closer to actual healing. We are delighted to engage in an exclusive interview with Chee Yin, who takes us through his academic journey and leadership.

How did the lessons you learned during your time at University Kebangsaan Malaysia shape your career?

During my university years, I was based in a research laboratory next to the stem cell transplantation ward at UKM Hospital. At the same time, I worked closely with the National Cancer Council, a non-profit organisation supporting cancer patients. These experiences gave me an unfiltered view of patients’ suffering. I witnessed the pain and struggles of patients endured through procedures like bone marrow aspiration and stem cell transplantation. Those moments left a deep impression on me and inspired my pursuit of regenerative medicine, exploring how cell and gene therapy could address cancer and other unmet medical needs.

Furthermore, I realized that scientific training alone is not enough. While we are well-equipped technically, most scientists lack exposure to the business aspects necessary to bring research innovations from the lab bench to market. My involvement with a company founded by doctors and business professionals gave me early insights into entrepreneurship, understanding how to translate and transform good scientific ideas into viable and impactful products.

People × Method = Result. With the right people and mindset, combined with effective methods, we can consistently achieve meaningful and successful outcomes

What opportunities did your university provide to help you build diverse expertise and professional networks?

During my time at university, I had the opportunity to attend numerous scientific conferences, which not only enhanced my technical expertise but also taught me the importance of networking. Building connections with peers, mentors, and professionals allowed me to share knowledge, leverage diverse strengths, and collaborate on ideas that could grow into impactful projects. I realized that individual knowledge is valuable, but combining expertise through strong networks creates far greater opportunities for innovation and success.

You have been active giving back to the community. What inspired you to focus on this aspect?

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to receive guidance and support from mentors who shaped not only my technical skills but also my sense of purpose. Their influence taught me the importance of paying it forward, not only to share knowledge, but also to keep learning from others.

I believe giving back is never a one-way act. Each time I mentor or collaborate, I gain fresh perspectives, even when working on familiar things. It is a two-way exchange that nurtures personal growth and strengthens the scientific community as a whole.

What is the future roadmap you have envisioned for yourself for the next five years?

Looking ahead, my goal is to leverage my knowledge and expertise to contribute to accessible healthcare. Through my work with ALPS Group, which is dedicated to advancing affordable preventive and precision medicine, we strive to build a fair and inclusive healthcare ecosystem, one where quality treatment is accessible to all, especially underserved communities.

What is the piece of advice that you'd like to pass to the upcoming leaders?

One of my mentors always shared a principle that deeply resonated with me: “People × Method = Result.” It is a simple equation, yet profoundly true. With the right people and mindset, combined with effective methods, we can consistently achieve meaningful and successful outcomes. This simple formula continues to guide not only my professional approach but also my commitment to contributing to the broader scientific community and society.
