Jay Sapallo
Founder & President
As the industrial realm transforms to Industry 5.0, operational efficiency and technological precision are more critical to success than ever. With world-class technologies getting increasingly democratized, the trust element in business partnerships often becomes the game-changer. Jay Sapallo, Founder and President of Fluid Direction Systems Corporation (FD Systems), is the epitome of delivering on that trust. Jay founded FD Systems—a specialist in instrumentation, automation, and process control—on the principles of high-quality products, extensive technological knowledge and the ability to support.
An alumnus of Mapua Institute of Technology (now Mapua University), Jay committed 19 years of his career in the engineering field, involving instrumentation, automation, and process control. He has worked with the top international manufacturers around the world, where he has established a reliable vendor base that helps Fluid Direction Systems Corporation to provide innovative high-performance solutions to challenging operations.
Under his leadership, FD Systems has developed a great reputation as one of the most trusted partners in the industry, which has brought an improvement in efficiency, reliability, and sustainability to clients in the region. Below is an excerpt from your exclusive interview with Jay.
What were the most transformative learning experiences during your time at Mapua University?
Mapua provided me with a solid technical foundation and a deep respect for precision and discipline. The university’s rigorous curriculum trained me to approach problems methodically and to never settle for mediocrity. Among the most transformative experiences was the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations through laboratory work, thesis projects, and collaborative initiatives. These experiences not only honed my technical skills but also laid the groundwork for my entrepreneurial pursuits.
How has the university helped nurture your entrepreneurship & business skills?
Mapua University strongly encourages independent thinking, which is a cornerstone of entrepreneurship. Although I majored in Mechanical Engineering, the Mapua environment fostered innovation and problem-solving skills essential for running a successful business.
These skills have been crucial in establishing FD Systems, where I now oversee operations, business development, and engineering services. My Mapua background has enabled me to view engineering not merely as a profession but as a valuable business opportunity.
How did the alumni network help you gain global exposure & build meaningful professional relationships?
Mapua’s strong reputation and international programs significantly broadened my professional horizons. The institution’s emphasis on global standards enhanced my competitiveness and confidence in engaging with international clients and suppliers.
As a result, my company now collaborates with leading technology providers from Europe, Asia, Japan, and the USA, manufacturers renowned for supplying world-class systems to our customers. Many of these partnerships were forged through the global mindset I developed at Mapua.
In the field, I’ve also encountered fellow Mapuans who now hold key positions in major companies that have become my clients. These professional connections, rooted in our shared Mapua background, have helped foster trust and open valuable opportunities, further strengthening my business network and industry relationships.
Seeing many Mapuan’s excel in leadership and technical roles across top corporations is a clear reflection of the university’s strong academic foundation and reputation as one of the country’s premier institutions for engineering and technology.
This consistent presence of Mapua graduates in the industry reinforces its standing as a leading producer of highly competent engineers recognized both locally and internationally.
What is one cherished memory you have from your time at Mapua University?
One cherished memory from my time at the university is the rigorous and challenging curriculum that greatly shaped us as students. During my cohort, our Freshmen student body was reduced before gradua tion, reflecting the high standards and strict screening process. As it is often said, graduating from Mapúa signifies that you are among the best in the industry.
Could you describe your leadership style & methodologies for leading your team?
My 19-year journey in the engineering industry has significantly shaped my leadership approach. I have learned that true leadership centers on building trust with customers and employees by delivering consistent results and remaining adaptable to evolving customer needs and market competition.
I emphasize the importance of strategic vision, continuous innovation, and empowering my team by clearly communicating Fluid Direction Systems Corporation's objectives as the foundation for our collective progress.
What methods do you use to stay updated on ongoing industry trends?
The rise of social media has greatly enhanced awareness of emerging industry trends. Previously, such information was primarily available through printed newspapers, and internet usage was limited. Today, industry updates are widely and promptly shared on platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook and through newsletters such as Google Alerts. This evolution of digital communication has enabled leaders to stay more current and informed about developments in the business market on a daily basis.
What roadmap have you envisioned for yourself over the next five years?
I look forward to expanding FD Systems’ footprint both locally and regionally. As an organization, we aim to become a recognized name in Southeast Asia for engineered fluid management solutions. Personally, I am committed to mentoring the next generation of engineers who will join our company and support our customers. Additionally, I seek to promote technology-driven solutions for sustainability and to explore collaborations that integrate AI, automation, and clean energy into traditional industries.
What advice would you offer to emerging leaders?
My advice is to remain curious and committed to lifelong learning. While technical skills may open doors, it is your mindset, adaptability, and integrity that will sustain your career growth. Always prioritize building meaningful relationships, listen more than you speak, and never hesitate to take calculated risks. Most importantly, lead with purpose by creating value not only for your business but also for people and society as a whole.
