Joyline Chai exemplifies this spirit of transformative leadership. As the Co-Founder of Global Hemisphere Group, she is at the forefront of driving sustainable development while advocating for ESG and SDG principles. CEO Insights Asia is privileged to interview her. Let’s read on.

Could you share an overview of your professional journey? How did you begin your journey in sustainability?

My professional journey in sustainability began in 2015, during my tenure with a prominent listed company in Malaysia. The organisation operated the entire OEM pipeline, from manufacturing and packaging to market delivery. At that time, we were tasked with addressing the carbon footprint declarations, a relatively unexplored area in Malaysia. This unique opportunity allowed me to gain firsthand experience in sustainability in a very practical way, and that became the foundation for my current work.

Over the last nine years, I have worked with diverse industries, including renovation firms and real estate developers, aiding them in data collection and devising strategies to embed sustainability into their operations. My enthusiasm for environmental advocacy led me to establish a sustainability-focused business, now closely aligned with the evolving principles of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance).

My approach is tailored and solutions-driven, recognizing that every client has unique needs

Highlight some of the toughest challenges you have encountered in the journey.

Convincing businesses to prioritise sustainability over immediate profitability has often been challenging, primarily due to a lack of understanding of its long-term benefits. Furthermore, the rapidly evolving regulations have required continuous adaptation. However, these challenges were opportunities to understand better and serve our clients. Over time, we’ve helped businesses realise that integrating sustainability fosters continuity and resilience, bridging the gap between profitability and environmental responsibility.

These experiences have strengthened my resolve to create impactful change, inspiring the tagline I live by, ‘Create Sustainability, Impact Together’.

Could you share some of the most memorable awards and recognitions you’ve received throughout your professional journey?

Among the milestones I hold dear is our contribution to enabling a client’s successful listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange. This achievement proved the tangible value of sustainable practices in modern business. In addition, I received a medal from the Penang State Government in July 2022. I was honoured for my work in sustainability, which was completely unexpected and deeply humbling. This award holds a special place in my heart as it marked a significant moment in my life and career.

Elaborate on your expertise in delivering strategic insights and governance, and how you prepare effective corporate growth strategies to lead a company forward?

My approach is tailored and solutions-driven, recognizing that every client has unique needs. ESG and sustainability are broad and complex fields, and focus on the importance of delivering customised solutions rather than generic ones.

When working on projects, I focus on crafting governance frameworks that ensure regulatory compliance and drives long-term profitability and business resilience. When done right, sustainability integration can unlock opportunities for growth while maintaining the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. This holistic, solution-based strategy enables businesses to thrive without compromising their core values.

Through my experience, I’ve learned to anticipate challenges before they arise, which allows me to provide clients with actionable, long-term solutions. Our ability to foresee potential obstacles ensures we’re well-prepared to address issues before they impact the project.

How would you describe your leadership approach, and what methodologies or principles do you follow in leading your team?

My leadership approach is centered on empowerment, empathy, and humanity. I believe that rules and regulations are necessary for governance, but they are most effective when applied in a way that considers the human element. Ultimately, how people react to these rules shapes the success of any organisation.

I lead by example, encouraging a growth mindset and viewing challenges as opportunities for innovation. I value diverse perspectives and ensure that team objectives are clear and aligned with the company’s goals. Accountability and recognition are key, as we celebrate achievements that contribute to our collective vision while maintaining a strong sense of ownership and purpose within the team.
