In a close interview with us, Justin shared generations, leveraging his exquisite knowledge of the sustainability industry and also his future endeavours.
Could you share about your professional background and experience? Additionally, what drives and inspires your daily routines?
With 18 years in the oil and gas industry, I have witnessed firsthand the sector's challenges and opportunities. Around five years ago, I transitioned into sustainability, driven by a deep curiosity to understand the key forces behind the energy transition and how we can create a more sustainable future. This journey has given me a unique hybrid perspective, one that bridges the technical and operational realities of oil and gas with the transformative potential of sustainability. My passion lies in harnessing this dual expertise to drive meaningful change, integrating sustainability principles with industry insights to create impactful solutions.
Leadership is about vision, influence, and action, driving sustainability & decarbonization with purpose and impact
What precautionary measures do you take to address stakeholder resistance when introducing new sustainability policies?
Overcoming stakeholder resistance to sustainability initiatives requires early engagement and a shared vision. Much like safety, sustainability is evolving from a niche concern to a core business priority. In APAC, the momentum is accelerating, with a strong focus on supply chain responsibility and sustainable investments, both critical to corporate reputation. To drive adoption, I foster inclusive discussions, align sustainability goals with business objectives, and showcase industry leaders as proof of success. By staying agile and continuously revisiting conversations, I ensure that sustainability remains a strategic and actionable priority.
What role does technology play in shaping your sustainability management strategy?
Technology plays a crucial role in sustainability management, as it is constantly evolving, much like our understanding of sustainability itself. For example, while nature-based solutions for decarbonization are effective and viable in many regions, technology-based solutions are equally critical and can significantly expedite decarbonization efforts. Although technology comes with costs, it also enables organizations to forecast and strategize effectively, determining the optimal timing and approach for investment. By leveraging technology, organizations can drive long-term sustainability more efficiently, complementing existing initiatives. At GE Vernova, one of the ways we differentiate ourselves by integrating advanced technological strategies to deliver impactful and forward-thinking solutions for our clients.
Can you share your leadership approach and the guidelines or methodologies you adhere to as a leader?
My leadership is defined by a commitment to inclusivity, which I recognize as a critical driver of success. As an accomplished leader, I have consistently fostered collaboration across diverse stakeholders, ensuring alignment with a shared organizational vision. Throughout my career, I have led high-performing teams by uniting individuals from different backgrounds, skill sets, and generations, leveraging their unique strengths to drive innovation and impact.
I believe that true leadership transcends generational boundaries, effectively engaging Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, and even Generation Alpha. Each generation contributes distinct perspectives and expertise, and I excel at harnessing these differences to build cohesive, forward-thinking teams. My inclusive leadership approach not only enhances organizational effectiveness but also aligns with global sustainability goals, reinforcing my commitment to long-term, purpose-driven success.
How do you stay updated on the latest trends and advancements in sustainability?
To stay updated on sustainability, I focus on standards and technology. I keep track of evolving sustainability reporting standards, leveraging my oil and gas certification background, and encourage newcomers to do the same. I’m also passionate about technology’s role in sustainability, particularly in decarbonization, carbon capture, and smart cities. Innovations in HVAC, carbon removal in real estate, and sustainable city projects offer promising climate solutions.
Could you share the key milestones of your professional journey and the success principles that have guided you?
A defining moment in my career was being part of a team that secured a major contract in Brunei, empowering our client with more effective asset management solutions. This experience was instrumental in shaping my leadership style, as it was one of my earliest and most profound lessons in leadership in action. Despite limited face-to-face interaction with my regional leader, their vision and strategic guidance were pivotal to our success, leaving a lasting impression on me. It reinforced the power of leading through influence rather than authority, because rallying a team toward a shared goal not only drives success but also fosters a stronger, more impactful dynamic.
What is the vision you have for your career over the next five years?
Over the next five years, I envision myself at the forefront of carbon emissions data management, driving innovation and impact in a rapidly evolving landscape shaped by AI and blockchain. As international standards tighten, I am committed to empowering organizations across the Asia Pacific and ASEAN regions with cutting-edge solutions for data management and climate analysis at a national level. With Malaysia set to chair ASEAN in 2025, I see this as a pivotal moment to showcase my organization’s expertise, fostering regional collaboration and accelerating progress toward a more sustainable future.
