The Thai aesthetic medicine market is experiencing substantial growth, with a projected market value of $3.45 billion by 2030. Intrinsically, the country is a major importer of aesthetic medical equipment, particularly high-end medical devices, and diagnostic equipment that are not yet widely produced locally. These imports play a crucial role in strengthening the nation’s aesthetic care ecosystem, supporting the growth of private hospitals, wellness and aesthetic centers, and its flourishing medical tourism sector in the process.

While many global companies supply these products, the need for indigenous providers leaves a wide gap. APA Aesthetic Global, led by Punyawee Ratanapatarapong, is bridging this gap by importing and distributing aesthetic medical devices. Punyawee is actively addressing a rising demand fueled by aesthetic medical and wellness market. She ensures compliance with Thai FDA regulations and oversees the import of top-tier brands like Pluryal (Luxembourg), TargetCool (USA), Clarius (Canada), and Exoxe (South Korea). A Mahidol University alumnus, Punyawee joins us in an exclusive interview to share insights into her academic journey and current ventures.

Beyond academics, what were the valuable lessons you acquired from Mahidol University?

Both of my degrees from Mahidol University played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. During my undergraduate years, I was honoured to represent Mahidol University in a national beauty competition among Thailand’s top universities, where I proudly placed as first runner-up. That experience opened doors to acting and modelling, giving me the confidence to express myself and connect with others in meaningful ways.

My master’s degree, however, marked a new chapter focused on my growth as an entrepreneur. I had the privilege of learning directly from seasoned professionals, gaining insights I could immediately apply to my business. This hands-on learning fueled me to grow my company by over 40 percent during my studies. Mahidol University was more than an academic institution for me, it was a launchpad for both personal and professional growth. It taught me how to shine in public and lead strategically behind the scenes, which are skills I now use daily.

How accessible were the faculty? Also, what is the one memory that stands out the most from your time at Mahidol University?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Mahidol University was being immersed in a community of highly accomplished individuals. Both the professors and my peers were active professionals in the healthcare and business sectors, creating a vibrant, real-world learning environment. Their practical insights and experiences enriched my understanding far beyond textbooks. Engaging in meaningful discussions, both in and out of the classroom, challenged my thinking and expanded my perspective. I also built lasting connections that continue to inspire and support me today.

More than anything, my university journey instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility. We were encouraged to take ownership of our roles in class or society. This mindset shaped my approach to leadership, teamwork, and quality care. I came to understand that true growth begins with personal responsibility and extends to how we uplift and contribute to those around us.

When team members feel like true partners in the company’s journey, they stop seeing themselves as just employees

How would you define your leadership approach?

Leadership starts with self-awareness. In this techade leadership isn’t just about management or promotion. Leading a team now requires more than ambition. It demands empathy, connection, and a shared sense of purpose. It is no longer just about how people work but why they work. It is essential to understand what drives your team and create a culture where everyone feels they belong and can grow.

From my experience, sustainable growth doesn’t come from control, it comes from collaboration. When team members feel like true partners in the company’s journey, they stop seeing themselves as just employees. They become co-owners of the vision. This mindset has shaped how I lead and helped our company grow consistently, year after year.

What is the future you have envisioned for yourself?

As the first movers in our sector, I can confidently say we have become the only Thai-owned company that has formed strategic partnerships with world-renowned brands. This collaboration has given us access to cutting-edge innovation, international safety standards, and clinical research, setting us apart in the field. Through global partnerships, I aim to establish a new benchmark for aesthetic treatments in Thailand, one that prioritizes quality, safety, and long-term care. I believe our company can play a key role in helping Thailand become a global wellness destination.

Looking ahead, the next chapter of my journey is rooted in sustainability, a way to create lasting impact. I want to be a voice that helps young people figure out how and why to study. I hope to guide them in discovering that when passion is paired with purpose, it can lead to something truly extraordinary.
