Founder & CEO

The staffing and recruitment industry has evolved far beyond the traditional role of filling vacancies. Today, staffing and recruitment firms are strategic enablers of business growth, helping organizations build agile, future-ready workforces in an increasingly digital and borderless economy.

As talent shortages intensify, remote work becomes mainstream, and artificial intelligence reshapes hiring practices, industry leaders are redefining workforce solutions by combining technology, operational excellence, and a deep understanding of people.

Their role is no longer limited to connecting employers with candidates; it is about creating sustainable talent ecosystems that drive long-term business success while opening meaningful career opportunities for professionals across the globe.

Among these visionary leaders is Shanil Wijewardena, Founder & CEO of Sprint Offshore Staffing, whose entrepreneurial journey reflects resilience, determination, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others. Born into a middle-class family in Sri Lanka, Shanil grew up watching his parents work tirelessly to provide a better future for their family.

Motivated by the ambition to build a life beyond borders, he and his wife moved to Australia as young students with just AUD 1,500, balancing full-time studies with multiple part-time jobs to support themselves. One of those jobs was at Wot A Kebab, where Shanil met Ryan Barrington. Ryan became Shanil’s mentor during his formative years in Australia, providing guidance that played an important role in shaping his approach to business and leadership, and his commitment to creating opportunities for others.

The idea for Sprint emerged not from a predetermined business plan but from solving a practical operational challenge. Seeking to reduce time spent on routine administrative tasks, Shanil built an offshore support team in Sri Lanka for his own business.

As the model proved successful, he recognized its potential to help other organizations access skilled talent efficiently, which led to the creation of Sprint. Today, his leadership continues to be guided by resilience, continuous learning, and a belief that creating opportunities for people ultimately creates stronger businesses and lasting impact.

Which milestones or accomplishments do you consider the most defining in your journey as a business leader?

One of the defining milestones in my journey was transforming an internal operational solution into a scalable workforce model that now supports business-es across Australia. Sprint was never conceived as a standalone business; it evolved from solving chal-lenges within my own companies.

As more business owners experienced the value of our offshore model, demand grew organically. The shift towards remote work during COVID-19 further accelerated the accep-tance of distributed teams and showed businesses that performance should not be judged by location alone.

Building a culture where nearly 75% of our hires come through employee referrals remains one of my proudest achievements because it reflects the trust we've earned.

As Founder & CEO of Sprint, how have your leadership principles evolved to successfully navigate changing workforce dynamics while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and sustainable growth?

My leadership philosophy has evolved from managing every detail personally to building systems that create lasting value for employees, clients, and the business. I believe sustainable growth comes from investing in people. That's why we have structured onboarding, regular performance reviews, and clear career development pathways.

We don't simply recruit talent and step away; we remain actively involved in supporting both our employees and our clients throughout the journey. By fostering accountability, continuous learning, and genuine engagement, we've built long-term relationships and a culture where people are empowered to perform, grow, and contribute meaningfully.

What has been one of the most significant leadership challenges you have encountered, and what key lessons has it taught you?

One of my biggest leadership challenges came early in my entrepreneurial journey when I tried to manage every aspect of the business myself. I quickly realised that spending time on low-value operational tasks limited both growth and innovation. That experience ultimately inspired the creation of Sprint. As the business expanded, the challenge shifted to maintaining employee engagement at scale.

I learned that sustainable success depends on building capable teams, investing in people, and creating an environment where employees feel valued, supported, and motivated to deliver their very best.

What major workforce trends do you believe will redefine the staffing industry over the next decade, and how is Sprint preparing for this future?

I believe the future of staffing will be defined by AI-enabled talent rather than AI alone. Businesses will increasingly seek professionals who know how to combine technical expertise with emerging technologies to deliver greater value. Employees who understand how to work alongside AI will become significantly more productive and adaptable.

At Sprint, we're preparing for this future by continuously upskilling our workforce, helping clients embrace AI responsibly, and building teams that combine outstanding human capability with intelligent technology. That balance will define the next generation of workforce solutions.

Looking ahead, what is your long-term vision for Sprint, and what legacy do you aspire to create in shaping the future of workforce solutions across the region?

My vision is to build Sprint into the region’s most trusted AI-enabled workforce partner while creating meaningful career opportunities for talented professionals and helping businesses grow sustainably. This recognition is deeply meaningful because it reflects the positive impact we have been able to create in the industry.

Every significant milestone in my own journey was made possible because someone believed in me and gave me an opportunity. That philosophy continues to shape Sprint today. If our legacy is one of empowering people and creating lasting opportunities, I believe we will have truly succeeded.
