Separator

imgDubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pony.ai, a leading company in the autonomous driving sector, to initiate pilot trials of self-driving cars in the emirate later this year.

These trials represent an important milestone towards the potential launch of fully automated services by 2026.

Pony.ai, a Silicon Valley-based firm with significant connections to China, recently introduced the seventh generation of its autonomous vehicles, developed in collaboration with major automotive manufacturers including Toyota, GAC, and BAIC.

These vehicles incorporate state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, alongside a comprehensive set of advanced sensors, lidars, radars, and cameras, all engineered for accurate navigation and secure operation across diverse road and weather scenarios.

The company has also established partnerships with key technology giants such as Tencent and Alibaba to embed its robotaxi services into popular digital platforms like WeChat and Alipay.

The MoU signing was officiated by Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, and Ann Shi, vice president of Strategy and Business Development at Pony.ai.

This event was attended by Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, Dr. Leo Wang, CFO of Pony.ai, and several senior officials from both organizations.

Al Tayer commended the partnership as a significant achievement in Dubai’s goal to establish itself as a global frontrunner in smart and sustainable transportation.

He highlighted that autonomous transportation is no longer just a vision for the future but is becoming a tangible reality. Governments, including Dubai's, are striving to develop the necessary regulatory and infrastructural frameworks to facilitate the implementation of self-driving vehicles.

According to Dr. Leo Wang from Pony.ai, this partnership signifies a strategic growth of the company's presence on a global scale.

Pony.ai's move into the Dubai market follows its successful implementations in various cities around the world and indicates a growing momentum in the adoption of autonomous transportation technologies.
