
FDA Names Oncologist Vinay Prasad as its New Vaccine Chief

Dr. Vinay Prasad, a hematologist-oncologist has been appointed as the newly appointed vaccine chief by the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Vinay will head the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, FDA commissioner Dr. Marty Makary told agency employees and on X.
Dr. Vinay is expected to contribute "scientific rigor, independence, and transparency," Makary said, calling the nomination "a significant step forward."
Dr. Vinay is originally from the University of California, San Francisco, where he most recently taught biostatistics and epidemiology.
Dr. Vinay studied physiology and healthcare ethics at Michigan State University. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 2009 with a medical degree, and in 2012, he finished an internal medicine residency at Northwestern University.
Before relocating to San Francisco General Hospital, he worked as an assistant and associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University from 2015 to 2020. He presently teaches hematology-oncology at UCSF as a full professor.
Dr. Vinay is especially well-known for his candid opinions on matters pertaining to vaccines and public health regulations.
He has established himself as a consistent voice in discussions about health policy, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Dr. Vinay criticized Trump for his handling of the epidemic, especially his use of experimental medications and refusal to wear a facemask. He also voiced concern about social distancing measures and the children's vaccine.

His appointment is observed to coincide with ongoing criticism and discussion of the FDA's involvement in public health regulations and vaccine approval procedures. It is anticipated that Dr.Vinay’s leadership at CBER will change the FDA's regulatory strategy.
