Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to meet on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, as Tokyo seeks to coordinate with Washington ahead of Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Japanese and U.S. governments are making arrangements for the talks, according to reports.
The proposed meeting comes as Japan seeks greater clarity on the direction of U.S.-China relations, particularly regarding Taiwan and broader regional security issues.
Trump is scheduled to meet Xi on September 24, according to reports, making the Takaichi-Trump meeting an opportunity for Tokyo to exchange views with Washington before the U.S.-China summit.
Japan has been closely monitoring the relationship between Washington and Beijing amid concerns over how potential agreements between the two powers could affect regional security and Japan’s economic interests.

Takaichi and Trump have already held several meetings and conversations since she became prime minister in October 2025. Their first face-to-face summit took place in Tokyo on October 28, 2025, during Trump’s visit to Japan.

They subsequently met at the White House on March 19 and briefly spoke on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France in June.
The two leaders have also held several telephone conversations. During their May call, Trump briefed Takaichi on his discussions with Xi following his visit to Beijing, while the leaders exchanged views on China, economic security and regional security.

Takaichi is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 22, the first day of the general debate, while Trump is also scheduled to speak that day. The 81st UN General Assembly’s general debate is scheduled from September 22 to 26 and on September 28.
