Former Disney platform distribution lead Justin Connolly will become YouTube's first global head of media and sports, as predicted by media insiders.

According to reports, Connolly will be in charge of managing the connections between other media firms and the Google-owned video platform.

His portfolio will include live sports rights, including the NFL game that will be broadcast from Brazil this autumn, and YouTube TV, a cable-style service.

YouTube has stepped up its competition against corporate media rivals in the last 12 months.

YouTube has developed podcast verticals on the homepage and creator channels to challenge Spotify and Apple as the leading podcast destinations.

YouTube is still the best place to stream, much more so than Twitch or Kick. Among VMPVDs, its YouTube TV product—a streaming cable service—has the biggest market share.

YouTube has also been showing off its size more than before.

CEO Neil Mohan routinely boasts about the platform's domination on mobile devices and its claim to be the most-watched service on television in interviews with the media and business community.

In the upcoming years, many anticipate that the platform will directly compete with television, concentrating on sports.

Connolly spent 12 years working in distribution and programming at ESPN prior to his 10 years as a senior Disney media distribution executive. To help YouTube become the go-to place for all media, Justin Connolly has received one of the most exciting new jobs in the media industry.
