Additionally, he is scheduled to convene with Premier Li Qiang later in the day. Starmer, the leader of the center-left Labour Party government, has faced challenges in fulfilling the economic growth pledges made by his administration. One of his key objectives is to enhance relations with China in anticipation of potential business prospects.

The first visit to China by a British prime minister since 2018 is occurring amidst strained relations between Britain and its longtime ally, the US, due to recent comments made by President Donald Trump, which included mentions of potentially acquiring Greenland. Kerry Brown, a scholar specializing in Chinese studies at King's College London, anticipates the announcement of several agreements between the UK and China, highlighting the enhancements in their bilateral relationship.

Starmer's visit swiftly succeeded that of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently finalized an economic agreement with Beijing aimed at eliminating trade barriers, sparking disapproval from President Trump. China is equally enthusiastic about improving relations, framing the partnership with Britain as a crucial juncture.
